| Customer Reviews: Take the pain out of performance reviews October 20, 2009 J. Knutsen (Denver, CO USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Every manager on my staff needs to set performance objectives and write performance reviews. I don't want the activity to be a waste of time; I want people to write performance documentation that can serve as learning process for the manager and as a development tool for the employee. Managers worked through the material in this book on their own and the feedback I got was that the objective-setting and review process was (finally!) a lot more satisfying.
Performance Reviews: Do them Right the First Time November 20, 2009 David M. Madway (San Francisco) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
A supervisor confronts no more difficut a task than evaluating subordinates. As a lawyer, I know that a badly done performance review is a path to court or to arbitration. If you lose, you end up with a permanent employee regardless of the quality of his or her performance.
"Writing Performance Reviews" leads supervisors around the potholes and bear traps. It shows how to evaluate peformance by laying out the facts in a manner that leads the reader to his or her own conclusions about the employee's performance, without making unsupported conclusory statements that can be destroyed in an arbitration. The material is concise and includes invaluable examples. It is presented logically and clearly and will enable supervisors to prepare reviews efficiently and effectively.
Without question, "Writing Performance Reviews" is the best book of its kind available.
Valuable Resource for the Workplace November 29, 2009 Joanne Karchmer (Oakland, CA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I'm trained as an attorney and have worked in public administration. I wish that every manager and supervisor would read this book. The review process could be so much better if people knew what a well-written objective looked like, what an effective review should be, the guidelines for what is acceptable and what is not, etc. Performance reviews are mandatory in most places and need to be done correctly to protect everyone. But the review process should be more than just a required box to check each year. It offers a valuable opportunity for employee development. This book covers the "right" way to do them and the "best" way to do them to improve performance.
Not Just a Phrase Book January 8, 2010 Katie Johnson (Miami, FL) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I was struggling with writing reviews and so my old boss gave me a phrase book for writing reviews. Anyone can tell me how to say "it" differently but the Terk book actually taught me how to write a review that is useful for the person I'm evaluating and to take me - the evaluator - out of the equation by using objective language and examples.
