A real thriller March 20, 2010 Jayne Ganz (England) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Alex Shaw has written a thoroughly researched good read. From the opening prologue to the end, the reader is kept in suspense. Hetman is a book not to be read if you want to go to sleep soon--too much excitement and action to act as a soporific. Shaw makes the Ukraine come alive--his experience living and teaching there have given him a plausible background in which to set this action-packed thriller. I recommend it highly.
Reminded me of playing Call of Duty: Modern Warfare March 15, 2010 Laurence Moroney 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
It's that kind of thriller -- pacy and exciting.
Well worth a read.
good read, nice indie flavour of originality March 16, 2010 Teri Dluznieski (VT, USA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I recommend this book. The characters are strong, the plot gripping and the action scenes, especially the gun battles, are written with an insight that not many writers possess. There are a couple of typos but that did not detract from an excellent debut novel. And the author has put a lot of meticulous research into creating a rich story.
and FYI... I have found typos as well as grammatical errors, not to mention poor creative element in many of the top-selling authors...

2010 Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award (ABNA) Expert Reviewer April 2, 2010 A. W. SHAW (UK) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
As the author of 'Hetman' I wanted to share with you all the review I receieved for 'Hetman' from the 2010 Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award (ABNA) Expert Reviewer:
The strongest aspect of this work is the writer's knowledge of Ukraine and Special Forces operations. The detail about Kyiv is well done, and creates an appealing background for the primary character, Aidan Snow.
Other strong aspects of Hetman are that the story has good pacing, moves along well and holds the reader's attention. The writing is clear, well defined and to the point, without burdening the reader with distractions from the plot.
Hetman is a well written novel that will appeal to those who love spy adventures. I liked the character of Bull, he felt real on the page, and you don't get better than that. The secondary characters are interesting and the author does a good job of character development, as well as creating a well paced novel.
