Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
2005 Scholar's Bookshelf reprint edition. A still unreplaced work in American naval history, this 1899 study (dedicated to Theodore Roosevelt, Pioneer of the Modern School of Naval Writers) remains the most comprehensive study of the role of the early privateers in the establishment of the American navy and their support of naval operations against Britain. The work traces the history of colonial privateering, its special dangers, and the roles of such figures as Truxtun, Porter, Biddle, Decatur, Perry, as well as such leading privateers as Silas Talbot, Jonathan Haraden, Solon Drowne, Thomas Boyle, and many others in early national privateering and navy building. Reprint edition. 2005: 519 pages, illustrated. Softcover.

Product information show a recent publishing date on 2006, but do not show the copyright date, which is 1899. (you can see that on page 2 of book using the online reader). That should not be a negative factor if considering buying. Have not read, but expect it to be hight informative, and highly footnoted by this hstorian aas he wrote the book. American Privateers "took the war' to the British durign the War of Independence (American) and the War of 1812 - economically perhaps created a greater impac upon the British that the United States Navy during those wars.
