IN A NUTSHELL: A CHRONICLE OF THE U.S. NAVY'S AIRSHIP EFFORT
Though the story starts out slowly, mostly about balloon races and small advances made prior to the official Navy effort, "THEY SAILED THE SKIES" does get down to some high-flying action, starting with the Hindenburg disaster.
THERE'S MORE:
Detailed accounts of the U.S. Navy's expanded program for convoy security, U-boat spotting, sea-rescue spotting and much more are covered under the section on World War 2. Also, the interesting evolution and development of the non-rigid airships, "G", "K", "L" & "M" are illustrated nicely and described somewhat comparitively, which I really wanted more of, along with accounts of the 'blimp at war'.
BOTTOM LINE: NICE READER - SOME INTERESTING WORLD WAR 2 BLIMP INSIGHTS
A short interesting read, very nice to sail away with for a few hours.

The Navy has a need for very slow speed aircraft with the ability to stay over the fleet, protecting it from submarines and providing the ability to see much further than from the top of the mast. The first reauirement was issued by Admiral 'Jackie' Fisher of Britain's Royal Navy. He got the airship he wanted in 18 days. The United States Navy followed these developments closely and soon ordered sixteen similar units. These began lighter than air flights that lasted until 1962 with a total of hundreds of craft.
This book gives a complete description of all of the Navy operations from the first free flying balloon (used for training for the first airships) to the airships, blimps and finally the research balloons flown just before John Glenn's historic ride into space.
This book is published by the Naval Institute press. They do a supurb job of providing well researched, well reviewed books. This one is no exception.
