Product Description The New Castle, Delaware-born author, after graduating from Lincoln University in 1883, was about to begin the study of medicine at Howard University when he suffered a partial loss of his eyesight that prohibited him from embarking on the extensive course of study. He chose instead to make a cruise on the U.S. Man-of-War as a cabin boy, one of the few positions available to Negroes in the Navy. This book recounts his experiences throughout his world cruise. Paynter resumed government service with the U.S. Postal Service and spent 39 years working for the Department of the Treasury. He wrote several other books, including one on the problems of the Negro in government service, Horse and Buggy Days with Uncle Sam and Fugitives of the Pearl, a depiction of character and tenacity in slavery days. Joining the Navy was originally published in 1895.
