5 out of 5 stars Captivating.....   July 15, 2008

NAVY SEAL Lieutenant Commander Joe Montgomery is the lone survivor of a mission that went horribly wrong. How can he forgive himself for the deaths of everyone serving under him? He comes home only to find his neighbor, Lieutenant Penny Price, offering him unwanted and unasked for assistance. Is she just a nosey busybody? Joe isn't sure at first, but now he finds himself wanting to protect her as the man who killed her father now wants Penny and her sister, Lia, dead.

I've read one book before by Mariliss Melton, the first one in this Navy SEALS series, and actually wasn't all that enthusiastic about it. But NEXT TO DIE really hit a homerun with me!

Joe is a tortured hero, blaming himself for a mission that went seriously wrong. He's the epitome of a good leader, however, as he doesn't take the lives of the men serving under him for granted at all. His journey back to living again is a powerful one, particularly as we see him survive through his grief and anger. Penny is the ideal heroine for a man like Joe. Her steadfastness and inner goodness shine through every single page. Marliss Melton does an excellent job at showing the love grow between these two characters.

Meanwhile, there is a substory involving Lia and Vinny, a nice romance that adds an additional layer to the story. The intrigue involving the threats to Lia and Penny only enhance an already incredible story. There are reoccurring characters from some of the earlier books and I now find myself wanting to go back and read those books to see their stories.

NEXT TO DIE captivated me from the first page. It isn't always an easy story and Marliss Melton definitely takes the reader on an emotional rollercoaster. But boy, am I glad I decided to give Marliss Melton another shot!

NEXT TO DIE
MARLISS MELTON

Rating: 4.5 Enchantments

Penelope Price, or Penny as her family and friends call her, is a Lieutenant and Physical Therapist in the Navy. Penny and her sister Lia have had a hard time of it lately and Penny has been taking care of Lia for a very long time. Penny is almost ready to say no the next time Lia calls but the fear in her voice convinces Penny to take her in again. It seems that Lia called the man both girls suspected of foul play in their father's death and told him he should be ashamed. Lia is definitely the more outgoing of the two and this time Lia may have gone to far.

After a few threatening calls, Penny and Lia decide to go to the FBI and ask for their help. Penny goes one step farther and calls on her neighbor, the sexy, hot, and a little disturbed Navy SEAL Lieutenant Commander Joe Montgomery. Joe has a few demons of his own, since his last mission went fatally wrong. However, Joe somewhat grudgingly respects his neighbor and decides to help her out.

Penny has had a thing for Joe for a long time, and with some pushing and prodding from Lia, she decides to make the first move. The only problem is that Joe doesn't want to trust anyone with his problems or Penny. Joe makes this problem even worse by trying to push her into the arms of other SEALS. One in particular shows a great interest and now Joe wonders what he was thinking when the Shark began circling his prey.

Can Penny and Lia stay alive long enough to find happiness, will the FBI catch the Killer before its to late, and will Joe finally realize what has been in front of his face all along?

The secondary characters in this story are unbelievably real, Ophelia or Lia and Vinny though secondary to Joe and Penny have their own love triangle and you find yourself not sure who you want to read about next, Penny and Joe, or Vinny and Lia.

What a wonderful and insightful treat in the world of Navy SEALS, Ms. Melton has captivated this reviewer and I personally cannot wait to find out more about her and her Navy SEAL series.

4 out of 5 stars Well written. Good characters. Nice plot.   January 15, 2008
Jane Stewart (Illinois USA)
But, it had one of my pet peeves. Joe and Penny have fallen in love with each other but each one thinks the other doesn't want a relationship. Through vague communication and innacurate assumptions the author creates this artificial conflict. I get angry when an author resorts to this cheap way to have a conflict. I would have given this fewer stars if it weren't for Vinny and Lia. I loved their relationship. Vinny caused changes in Lia's life for her own good. Theirs was an excellent and fun side story. Story brief: Joe is a Navy SEAL who survived a battle but lost his men. He's depressed and drinking a lot. His neighbor Penny helps him. Five years earlier Penny's dad was killed. Penny and her sister Lia are now getting threatening phone calls. They are in danger from their father's killer. Vinny, another Navy SEAL (20 years old) meets Lia, a few years older than he. He is drawn to her and she resists at first. Sexual language: mild. Number of sex scenes: seven. Setting: current day Virginia Beach, Virginia. Copyright: 2007. Genre: romantic suspense.

5 out of 5 stars "You can't help but love a SEAL"   January 14, 2008

Navy Commander Joe (Monty) Montgomery was on a
reconnaissance mission in Northern Afghanistan.
Three SEAL's and sixteen men aboard the Chinook were
killed instantly. Joe was the only survivor. He was physically
injured from the mission. Captain Lucas sent Joe back to the
states to recuperate. Joe is a single high ranking officer
who likes being around women and partying. When he came
back to the states he felt guilty being the only one to
survive the mission and thinking it was his fault.
Joe turn to alcohol for solace.

Joe's neighbor, Lieutenant Penelope Price, is a Physical
Therapist. Even though, Penny was Joe's neighbor, he
really didn't pay attention to her until he return back
to the states. Joe's injuries from his mission left him in pain,
plus the stress from the failed mission, made his muscles tight.
As a physical therapist, Penny nursed him back to health.
Penny and Joe had a mutual attraction that soon developed into
intimacy. Penny turn to Joe about her father's business partner,
Eric, who's on the run and looking for her sister. Lia is 24 and
a little on the wild side. Penny is like a mother to her.
Beneath it all, Lia is a caring person and watch over her sister
Penny's well-being. Lia has a romance going with Vinny,
a Navy SEAL, its coincidence, he's in the same outfit as Joe.

Penny and Lia's father was killed in a car accident. They
believe it was murder. Penny and Lia looked into their father's
death and learned that ricin was stolen from the lab, leading
them to suspect their Dad's business parter. They acculumated
all the evidence they could and went to the FBI. Subsequently,
they found themselves being pursed by Eric.

The characters in (Forget Me Not, In the Dark, Time to Run,)
in the previous books played a small role in the end.
I thought, it was an excellent move to learn what's
going on in their lives. Explicit Sex.
The fifth book in the series (SEAL's)
"Don't Let Go" Due April 1, 2008!
I highly recommend Next to Die!

In the beginning of the book HC, Marliss Melton wrote:
In loving memory of three Navy SEALs who died June 28, 2005,
while on a reconnaissance mission in support of
Operation Redwing, in Afghanistan
and the sixteen Special Operators who sought to rescue them
also perished.
To the soul survivor
This is not your story, but your heroism inspired it.

5 out of 5 stars fun & exciting   October 13, 2007
Make it Funny (San Francisco, CA)
I am happy to find another wonderful author. My other favorites now have serious competition. Melton specializes in Alpha Males and red head heroines. The SEALS she creates are handsome, smart, and have to-die-for bodies. There are so many SEALs hopping around, you can't walk around this story without tripping over one.

2 sisters are trying to find their father's murderer, which put them in danger. They both fall in love with 2 SEALs, so there's actually 2 romances in 1 book. I actually found Ophelia's character more interesting and her romance much steamier.

The ending chapters were a bit of a letdown. The tone changed, it became serious and not nearly as fun as the first 5/6 of the book. I know some parts just shouldn't be funny, but the ending just felt incomplete.
