Product Description This is a tale of two young men who are forced into the choices of being drafted, resisting the draft, or enlisting in a branch of the military. Neither knew each other before this dilemma. Neither felt resisting the draft was appropriate. However, each believed in democracy and the United States of America, so they enlisted in the U.S. Navy. From different parts of the country these two young men were now on a confusing collision course to meet each other, become good friends, and, learn of the fun, hardships, and absurdities of military life. Written in a unique narrative style, Anchors Aweight (a play on words), alternates narration from character to character in each chapter until they meet aboard their ship. They form a bond as they deal with these new experiences. The adventures, hardships, and fun only accelerate from chapter to chapter, all the way to the very end. For the duration of their enlistment, they learn that even in miserable or undesirable situations, life can be satisfying. "Life is what you make it!", says Jenswold. Morris says a story like Anchors Aweight is important because it serves as a simple reminder of the sacrifices made by our veterans, during war times, for all Americans. "We all have, or have had, friends, fathers, brothers, mothers, sisters, sons, daughters, aunts or uncles in similar circumstances," he writes. It is a sea story, a naval tale and it is about the military. The military is chock-full of adventures and themes that never change, so this chronicle relates well to all the branches of the military. Anchors Aweight is a fictional account of the authors' experiences in the U.S. Navy 30 years ago. This entertaining chronicle is a smooth read with a dose of reality and a bountiful supply of humor.

If you were in the military you don't want to miss this one. It doesn't matter what branch you served. You will laugh until your sides hurt!
I'm just an old man of the sea August 5, 2006 old man of the sea (alabama coast) 10 out of 10 found this review helpful
I'm 66 years old and never was in the military, but I now understand more about the average guy's experience in the military. That book was also so funny in some places that I laughed until I had tears in my eyes. Those authors did a good job of writing that story.

This book will remind you of things that probabbly happened to all of us in boot camp and on board ship. Very funny. Easy reading. hard to put down once you start it.Highly recommended!
I was there..they were too! October 16, 2006 Martin F. Schacht (Solana Beach, CA United States) 11 out of 12 found this review helpful
Knocked this book out in no time: For me, the book brought back memories of my personal Navy experience. As an ex-tin can sailor, I really think the book captures the essence of life in the Navy, from boot camp to the ship's social pecking order, and ship board living. The author's rekindled memories of our how blue jackets are treated in our local Navy communities such as Newport RI, Norfolk, VA, sometimes good, sometimes bad..I enjoyed the development of one aspect of the story, told humorously, that gradually over time, a sailor can become more and more a part of the system, at times a FUBAR system, that somehow manages to function, more or less. The book captures the total Navy experience for me, and a reminder that rewards go to the bold. Knowing and engaging in the practice of stretching the rules a bit won't kill you, it's a valuable lesson, improvise as needed, bluffing is a valuable tool. In conclusion, great book and very well done in my opinion. I have already bought three (3) additional copies and sent them hither and yon, to folks I know who shared the Navy experience. great story about the adventures (and misadventures) of two young men immediately before and during their naval duty. very authentic and natural, this book has wacky stories and humorous characters you can identify with. an entertaining light read also with deeper ideas at its core. 4.5/5
