Product Description
Woman On the Run By Lisa Marie Rice What's a girl to do? Sophisticated urbanite Julia Devaux loves her life. What's not to love? A fabulous job in publishing, wonderful friends, gorgeous apartment, the company of her beautiful though temperamental Siamese cat, Federico Fellini?she's got it made. And then Julia has the bad taste to witness a Mob murder and her life goes straight down the toilet. Under the Witness Security program, Julia is relocated to the boondocks, a hundred miles from the nearest bookstore and Estee Lauder outlet, where the only fast food is deer and the only entertainment is sex with a laconic local rancher. Luckily, talking isn't what Sam Cooper does best... Former SEAL Sam Cooper can't believe his luck when mystery woman Sally Anderson hits town. Simpson, Idaho, can't even offer a decent cup of coffee let alone gorgeous new grade school teachers. The instant Cooper sees Sally, he stakes her out as his own. Granted, he's not much good at talking, but he does his best to keep her happy. When he discovers her life is in danger, he'll stop at nothing to keep her safe and with him. He's not alone. The whole town of Simpson wants to keep her. Publisher's Note: This is a rewritten and expanded version of a story previously published elsewhere under the title Pursued.

5 out of 5 stars Intense and romantic!   November 26, 2008
Liz (Oregon)
I absolutely love LMR's books. Her heroes are totally alpha and super sexy. The heroines aren't too weak but not too stubbornly combative and overly independent (trying to prove something to the world) throughout the story like some other frustrating books I've read.

I can't help but get sucked in to her stories and fall in love with the characters. For these heroes its all or nothing. When they fall in love its all the way and they will do anything for their woman. I loved that. I especially liked how Cooper's intense need and desire for Julia was such that he just couldn't control himself. He was so in to her and super protective yet gentle. Romantic love scenes too.

Good job, LMR. I'm a fan now!!

5 out of 5 stars I love this book!   September 28, 2008
Agent Scully (Canada)
The plot is excellent and the characters sound like real people not stock cardboard cutouts. Julia is spirited but not dumb. Cooper is hot. There is less sex than you might expect from an erotic romance (some of them seem to be nothing but sex scenes strung together) and that's ok. The identity of the Professional took me by surprise and I had to reread the earlier scenes to make sure I hadn't missed anything. Clever! Lisa Marie Rice is fantastic, one of my favorite authors now.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Read!   August 18, 2008

Lisa Marie Rice is a fantastic author. I could not stop reading Woman on the Run - reading til after 2am when I had a big meeting the next morning! And it was worth it -- I've also found the rest of LM Rice's work, and am eagerly waiting for the next book!

3 out of 5 stars Not so bad, but not so good either ...if that makes sense   August 15, 2008

Julia Devaux is on the run. She, quite unwittingly, was a witness to a mob hit and now there's a 2 million dollar bounty on her head. She's placed in the Witness Security Programme and relocated, much against her will, to small town Simpson, Idaho and renamed Sally Anderson. At first she hates the place and can't wait to get out, but as time goes by it grows on her in a way. Rancher and former Navy SEAL, Sam Cooper, has also gotten her panties in a twist, and soon Julia finds herself settling into small town life.

I really liked the premise of this story, and the hero sounded superhot. I bought this book on the wave of positive Amazon reviews, but I don't really see what all the fuss is about to be honest. I certainly dont think it deserves all the rave reviews it has received. In fact, while I wouldn't say I'm sorely disappointed, I am disappointed.

I mean while likeable enough the characters were just plain bland. The heroine was a bit more fleshed out than the hero, and even though you were given a good idea of who they were before they met, once they met their interaction was rather ... the right word escapes me, but for me their interaction was missing something. I felt the author told me quite often how fierce and dangerouse and alpha the hero was but didn't show me a lot. He was supposed to be this big silent guy ... literally, but to be honest a part from the times when we were not being told he's silent, he spoke more than the heroine. Though it's natural for someone to lose their tongue around someone they fancy, the lost of that tongue was supposedly not just a momentary occurence with our hero. We are led to believe that his tongue is always lost. It was portrayed as a character flaw, therefore I somehow expected him to be a man of few words not only when he was with the heroine but also when he was with other people since that's how he's said to be, inherently, as a person. I'm probably just nitpicking (you decide) but from the reviews I drew a very different conclusion about the hero than what he actually was so I'm just trying to avoid you falling in the same trap.

Our heroine also had a few loopholes. She was supposed be urban and sophisticated and well-travelled. She had a cat named Federico Finelli for peace sake! Can you imagine a less sophisticated person naming their cat Federico Finelli? I couldn't. That's why I found the heroine's demure little "Yes Cooper" answers to the hero quite out of character. No buts, no arguments, no opinions, just "Yes Cooper". She didn't even possess the backbone to confront the hero of his unintentional but callous treatment of her when he had to go out of town, and as a matter of fact, every time they did the nookie. I just felt the way her character was said to be was not the same as what was shown.

The storyline was good, but I figured out who "the professional" was almost as soon as he/she was introduced. However, up until the introduction, I liked how LMR portrayed the professional. Now there was a sophisticated character, though the professional too verred(sp?) out of character once he/she was no longer just "the professional" but a person with a name.

And finally, the sex. I was very disappointed. I couldn't believe I was reading an erotic novel. The sex was just plain boring--missionary all the way and nothing in between to spice it up. The hero kept thinking about foreplay but he never got around to it. He thinks about exploring our heroine's body but for the life of me doesn't and there is no good reason why. Same goes for the heroine. I kept thinking, when are they going to get to the fun stuff? Is that it?! Very disappointing, indeed.

From the reviews I had great expectations for this book, but it did not deliver, for me, as the reviews promised. The only thing that stuck out in my mind was the hero's rather wry sense of humor--one that only exists in his head since he's not much of a talker. I got a couple laughs out of his musings. The secondary characters were also nice, nothing special, but fit what one might think of small town folks.

But a part from that the book was a disappointment, sad to say. I liked it, don't get me wrong, but I really wanted to love it. Maybe that's why I'm so disappointed. So much so that I have decided to purchase Midnight Man just to give LMR a second chance. I'm really curious to see what exactly the other reviewers found so great about her. I figure I had to give her another chance to live up to her rep, before I write her off as another semi-mediorce(sp?) romance author.

I'd recommend that you not purchase this book for the whooping sum of $16.99, rather get it used from a friend, bookstore or library or if you simply must get it new, at a price that's way way way cheaper than $16.99. The e-book costs $7.99 at Ellora's Cave but I still think that's too much to spend on this book.

This could of been a wonderful book except we have another woman doing tstl stuff. Granted we all like a spunky character but to sneak away from people who are protecting you to go to the opening of a diner run by your friend is moronic. Especially when you know that hitmen most likely know where you are. I know we are meant to suspend disbelief but believing anyone would risk getting shot in the head for cake and chocolate mousse is too much to ask.
