5 out of 5 stars Inspiration adn Education in One Book   August 25, 2008
Brandi D. Day (Orlando, FL)
Wow! I never thought about writing a resume in such detail until this book. From the introduction, I was excited about the possibilities presented. The author gave hope for finding the right job for me even in a tough economy. And then, once hope was generated, the book walked step by step through everything I ever needed to know to be thorough in writing a resume that will get me noticed. There was no specific agenda or sales pitch. Plus, I didn't have to read it straight through, I could flip to the chapters I needed. For me, Chapter 9 was the bet part, helping to deal with the difficult situations in life, everything from a criminal history to gaps in employment to being over-qualified. With this book, I was given the opportunity to seek the job I wanted. And, just when I thought I was prepared to begin my new and improved job search, the book detailed everything from writing a cover letter to preparing for the interview and following up. It really is a full service career counselor tucked into 290 pages readily available for constant review.

5 out of 5 stars Doggone good resume book!   August 20, 2008
Robert R. Quarteroni (Luzerne PA)
Maybe you can teach an old dog new tricks; at least this slightly seasoned dog believes you can, and this is one great book for learning news ways to do an old thing: Create an effective resume.
After a career in first daily journalism and then higher education public relations I find myself in the job market again. I thought that my old resume, constructed over the years, would be fine. Boy, was I wrong.
But Dale Mayer, in "How To Write and Design a Professional Resume and Get the Job" came to the rescue. Her 287-book is chock full of everything you need to write a good, perhaps great, resume. What I found best was the series of "self-assessment" worksheets. They let me see that my resume was all over the place and that I needed to redo it to "include only what is relevant to the post" I am applying for. So I have.
And you can too. Whether you want to create a basic, targeted, creative, web or video resume this book can show you how to do it, covering the basics from cover letters to interview techniques. And the accompanying CD-ROM lets you view various resume styles that can be adapted to your particular needs
