Stotan: A cross between a Stoic and a Spartin

It's the last swimming season for Walker, Nortie, Lion, and Jeff, and their coach is building their self-discipline in a grueling four-hour-a-day test of stamina designed to bring them to the outer edge of their capabilities.

As it turns out, Stotan Week is also the week in which secrets are revealed, and the four friends must draw upon their new strengths for an endurance they never knew they'd need.

4 out of 5 stars Swimmers Bond   February 26, 2007

This book is about four high school seniors who are members of their swim team. Their swim coach has challenged them to use their vacation week to do some heavy training--to become stotans. These four swimmers are up for the challenge. They stay for the week in one of the members' apartments--Lion's parents and brother recently died in an accident, so he lives by himself and is able to host his three friends for the week.

Over the course of these five days of grueling training, these four guys come to really know each other, and we as readers get a glimpse into their lives and the things they each have had to survive.

The characters are great. They are nice and clever and dedicated and just all-around interesting. The whole idea of stotan training and what is done with it is really cool. I'm not sure how I felt about the twist to the story, though.

This is one book you may actually get some tough, too cool, high school kids to read. It's quite well-written and realistic, dealing with some hard-hitting issues in an engaging manner. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Timeless insights about friendship and life   June 12, 2006

I bought this book when I was still in high school, read it, then forgot all about it. I liked the story well enough, because it was about swimming. But years later while I was at university, I pulled this book out again and realized that there was much more to this story than swimming -- that, in fact, if there ever was a course on friendship, this book could be a primer. This is a Young Adults book, but even now that I'm out of university, I still like to read Stotan! once in a while to remind myself of what really matters in life.

5 out of 5 stars Love, Friendship, and Perseverance   May 27, 2005

Stotan by the magnificent Chris Crutcher is a story about a group of friends who are aiming to win state in the 4 X 100 meter relay. Yet on the way they must concure their minds and bodies in order to succeed. Walker Dupree the captain of the swim team must decide between the beautiful Devnee and the girl next door Elaine, while Nortie must deal with his problem at home. Lion is forced to cope with loneliness after the loss of his family and Jeff needs to overtake life's greatest terror.

Once Max introduced Stotan Week the plot begins to unfold and Stotan! becomes almost impossible to put down. Ideal for teens interested in learning about friendship, perseverance, love and even death. What is Stotan Week? Check it out at your local library and find out!

4 out of 5 stars Stotan!   May 27, 2005

The book Stotan! by Chris Crutcher, is aimed toward young adults. The book is about four high school students who are on the swim team together. Their coach, Max, has them go through a rigorous week of training known as Stotan week, which will push them to the edge of their physical capabilities. But being a Stotan becomes more than just being a tough swimmer. A Stotan is a cross between a Stoic and a Spartan, and he shows no pain. During the Stotan week, Max says that everyone at on time will have to face "the dragon" at some point in the season. For the main character, Walker, his dragon is to go to make top twelve at state, and to break up with his girlfriend which is very difficult for him to do. Max says that you cannot take the dragon head on, but you must go with it, and then you can beat it. As the book progresses, each character meets their own dragon, which will bring about their innermost Stotan, and the dragon becomes more than just swimming. They face aspects of their inner Stotan which they thought that they would never have to do.

Stotan! is full of enjoyable and realistic characters. There is humor and sadness in every corner of the book. The book will leave you inspired, and ready to take on the "dragon".
