Great Review of "The Big U!" July 18, 2008 R. Simkins (Phoenix, AZ USA) Having been on this great ship as a child in 1968, and recently acquiring several pieces of memorabilia, I was looking for a comprehensive reference resource to add to my collection. This book accomplished my objective. It contains a thorough pre-build biography of Francis Gibbs et al, and the read gives you the impression that you're learning about the ship for the first time. Truely, well done! I would like to have seen a more in depth photo chronology. The book does document a fair amount of photos, but with her incredible history and yet undetermined fate, additional photographic content would be a plus. Notwithstanding, this is the best written resource available & Amazon pricing the least expensive. I highly recommend it for any SSUS or maritime buff.
One Star or Four - Depending... July 13, 2008 Esteban Molina (San Francisco) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
If you are looking for a detailed written history of the ship, then this book is very good. If, however, you want a book something like William Miller's output - that is, mostly photographs with minimal but pertinent commentary - you will be disappointed. This is a very thorough history of the ship [at least as far as I've read thus far], but there are very few illustrations and what photos there are are not always very clear. Quite a few color illustrations in the form of magazine ads from the '50's which add a nice period flavor, but I actually wanted to know what the ship looked like, especially its interior. The small amount of photos is why I dock one star, even though the text itself is fine. SO...if you want lots of pictures, this is not your book; but if you want a detailed history of the ship, I think you'll be happy.
fine reference book May 6, 2007 Mark C. Aron (rancho cordova, CA USA) 3 out of 6 found this review helpful
this is quite a decent reference book. the only thing missing is a complete deck plan.
COME TO SOUTH PHILLY AND SEE THE SHIP IN PERSON! May 3, 2007 Philly (Philadelphia, PA United States) 0 out of 25 found this review helpful
Better yet, take it back with you! She may have been a great lady back in the day, but the ship is just a rotting eyesore taking up space here in Philly! Wish someone would buy it for scrap.
Last Word on SSU September 23, 2006 James J. Varela (Sarasota, FL United States) 2 out of 4 found this review helpful
This book is the last word on this liner. The SSU was the last of the great ocean liners before Jet Airplanes made them obsolete. If you are studying our nation's flagship this is the book !
