Design
With a total weight of 5.1 ounces and slim measurements of 3.87 x 2.91 x 0.87 inches (WxHxD), the nuevi 350 is just right for the pocket or purse. A bright, 64,000-color display dominates the front of the device and a resolution of 320 x 240 pixels means that there's plenty of room for displaying map data and other elements of the device's interface. An SD memory card slot is provided for expansion software, such as a points of interest database, media files and electronic guides (see below). The flip-up antenna includes an MCX-type connector for connecting the unit to an external GPS antenna. Meanwhile, a powerful built-in speaker resides on the back of device. A built-in lithium ion battery will give you for to eight hours of battery life, depending on use. In addition to an AC charger, the unit also ships with a 12-volt power adapter for vehicle charging, as well as a windshield suction cup mount.

Fortunately, Garmin has made it easy to interface with the nuevi 350's 700 megabytes of onboard memory, thanks to "plug-and-play" USB mass storage support. Just plug the device into your computer's USB port and you've got instantaneous access to all the audio books, music, photos, supplemental maps and other data on the nuevi 350's internal and SD card memory.

Navigation
The nuevi 350 is first and foremost a personal GPS device. Wherever you go -- in your car or on foot-- the device offers extremely accurate position data, thanks to a high-sensitivity integrated GPS receiver by SiRF and WAAS-enabled, 12-satellite reception. Combined with detailed maps of the U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico the nuevi 350 provides automatic routing, turn-by-turn voice directions, and touchscreen control-- making it easy to find your way anywhere. Plus, the unique "text-to-speech" feature calls out turns by street name, and you can choose from either 2D or 3D mapping perspectives when you're viewing your route on the display. Additionally, the nuevi 350 is compatible with Garmin's GTM 10 FM TMC traffic receiver*, which allows users to avoid traffic tie-ups by simply pushing a button that will calculate a new route.

As mentioned, the nuevi 350 comes packed with mapping data for North America, but you can can also load up your custom points of interest. Set up proximity alerts for school zones, safety cameras, and more using Garmin's free POI (points of interest) loader program (available from garmin.com).

Important note about map updates: Due to our high volume of sales, almost every Garmin portable GPS navigator sold by Amazon.com will come with the most recent map version. If you ever do need a map update, you can purchase one from Amazon.com at our Garmin Store.

The device automatically calculates the fastest route and provides voice-prompted turn-by-turn directions along the way.
Tools for the Journey
Navigation is just part of the journey, and the nuevi 350 is one of the first devices to recognize that. The built-in "Travel Kit" offers an MP3 player, an audio book player from Audible.com, a jpeg-format picture viewer, a world travel clock with time zones, a currency converter, a measurement converter, and a calculator.

In addition to the included travel tools, additional software add-ons are available, such as the Garmin Language Guide, with data provided by Oxford University Press. This software suite contains a multilingual word bank, phrase bank, and five bilingual dictionaries. The multilingual word bank and phrase bank supports nine languages and dialects, including American English, British English, French, German, Italian, Brazilian Portuguese, European Portuguese, European Spanish, and Latin American Spanish. Now you can look up and translate more than 17,000 words or 20,000 phrases per language -- right in the palm of your hand. Through the unit's text-to-speech interface, users can get a spoken pronunciation of each entry in the word bank, along with gender and part of speech information.

Another useful add-on software package, the Garmin Travel Guide, is loaded with information provided by Marco Polo. These guides put in-depth travel information such as reviews and recommendations for restaurants, tourist attractions, and more at your fingertips. The software allows you to navigate to an address or search points of interest-- places like hotels, restaurants, shopping, and tourist attractions. The nuevi 350 automatically calculates the fastest route and provides voice-prompted turn-by-turn directions along the way. The unit also audibly announces the name of upcoming streets-- letting you keep your eyes on the road while navigating through busy traffic and tricky roadways. And if you stray off course, the nuevi 350 automatically calculates the quickest way to get back on track.

*Traffic services available only in select cities where RDS-TMC coverage exists. Requires the GTM 10 FM TMC traffic receiver and subscription fee to enable traffic capability.

4 out of 5 stars Garmin 350: the good and the bad   July 5, 2008
1 out of 1 found this review helpful

Pretty good little machine but it has some significant drawbacks. Having it speak the name of the next turn is very helpful. Its small size is very nice for use while walking around the city. The screen is large enough for good visibility while not obstructing your view in the car, and making it small enough to fit in your pocket for walking. It's very nice to be able to search for nearby things by name (i.e. Starbucks). The little sticky sandbag dash mount (optional) is very effective as keeping the GPS on the dash while making it easy to stick out of sight when you leave the car. It seems to automatically zoom in when you get to a turn and can use the greater detail (very clever).

It tends to lose satellite reception a lot more than the built-in GPS in my '03 Acura. This is quite irritating and it does it under inexplicable circumstances (i.e. while on a flat road w/ no mountains, buildings, or trees for miles around). I'd like its voice to be louder (I have it turned up all the way and it's still not loud enough for many conditions). I'd also like it to display the location on the map of nearby things you searched for (like gas stations) rather than just displaying their name, direction, and distance from you. Another difficulty is that it doesn't seem to provide a good way for one to review to route it has selected to get you to your destination. The only way I could find to do that was to zoom out far enough to encompass the entire route - and this requires way too many clicks of the zoom button. It also doesn't provide an easy way for you to re-route it a la Google Maps' feature of dragging the route to where you'd like it. All this points out the beauty of the way the new iPhone combines GPS and Google Maps.

5 out of 5 stars I don't have to stop for directions...a guy thing   July 5, 2008
This was a case of instant love. It is very user friendly. My daughter bought one from a local retailer, but it was stolen. I was so impressed with it that I bought my own via Amazon and saved a hundred dollars. After playing with it for half an hour I had everything at my fingertips. It is so full of neat little gadgets to customize it. I have Stonehenge on the opening screen and the voice is British. The website is fairly user friendly and has a nice selection of free downloads along with upgrades. The only frustration I had with the unit is that it insisted that I use Chicago toll roads until I discovered the avoidance menu and blocked it. After that, It worked perfectly. The kid borrowed it to go to her grandmother's house in Massachussetts. I wonder if there is a wolf-avoidance feature on it?

4 out of 5 stars Good unit, old maps   July 5, 2008
1 out of 1 found this review helpful

I previously owned a Magellan GPS, and I find the nuvi 350 superior in all but two regards. First, it doesn't have Bluetooth capability (which doesn't bother me, as my Magellan had poor audio quality). Second, the maps are from 2006. Most times that isn't a problem, but I find it strange that Garmin doesn't provide a free update, given they have the new maps. This simply reminds me that the unit was manufactured a couple of years ago and has been sitting in a box.

Garmin, this unit is great, but be a class act and give us the newest maps for free, ok?

5 out of 5 stars Nuvi 350 GPS   July 5, 2008
The Garmin Nuvi 350 worked flawlessly right out of the box with no need for instructions. Software was intuitive and thus easy to use. Satellite detection was perfect. Voice was clear and easy to understand. I am glad I bought the model where street names are used in the voice directions. Quite often the distances to a turn were significantly shorter than the unit said. I found this was the same whether it was WAAS enabled or not. The screen was easy to read and automatically switched from day to night screen which was very convenient. I highly recommend this unit and will likely buy it as gifts for my older grandchildren who drive. Garmin nuevi 350 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator

3 out of 5 stars Not so highly rated   July 5, 2008
I purchased the Garmin Nuvi 350 because I have never used a GPS before and the unit was highly rated by a major consumer magazine. I used it in a rental car during a trip to Maine. When startting up the unit in a new location, I found that it might take several minutes for the unit to acquire the satellite signal. I often had to stand outside the car to do this. The unit appeared to function well on the major highways, but in some of the cities and towns, directions were inappropriate. For example, in Freeport, ME it told us to turn the wrong direction to leave town and we found ourselves going down an alley and turning into a parking lot. In Brunswick, ME it told us to turn the wrong way down a one way street. It had difficulty adapting to changes in direction when deviating from the prescribed route. I realize that some of this is due to my lack of familiarity with the unit. However, the written documentation accompanying the unit was meager. In addition, I have to wonder if the preloaded maps were the most up to date.
