4 out of 5 stars Pleasantly surprised   October 15, 2008

My son went to Ghana, West Africa to work with the Peace Corps for two years, and he left me a large box of books to ship to him. After spending a couple hundred dollars shipping $100 worth of books my wife read about Kindle in Time magazine. I bought one with the idea of loading a bunch of books into it and shipping it to him. I figured it had to be cheaper in the long run than shipping all those books. Well, after trying it out I couldn't bring myself to part with it, so I kept that one and bought another to send to my son.

I love the Kindle, and it's practically my constant companion. I was surprised at how easy it is to use and how readable the screen is. Being an old geezer, using the keyboard is beyond my ability and dexterity, though. I use the bookmark feature, but trying to type in notes is out of the question for me. That requires much younger eyes and fingers, I think.

I'd like to see a simplified version (at a lower price) without the keyboard - essentially just a simple electronic reading device. I wonder how many people really use the keyboard anyway. I think it would be a hot seller at a lower price.

I look forward to a larger selection of books in the future - more classics and obscure works. Surely in the future you'll be able to request any book in print and download in onto Kindle.

I'm pleased at how long the battery charge lasts. I probably recharge every third or fourth day, and I pretty much leave it on constantly.

I had concerns about losing the "feel" of a "real" book. No problem! I find the Kindle just as satisfying to hold and read as any hardback.

So I highly recommend Kindle to any serious reader. Just one suggestion to Amazon: give us a simpler version at a lower price.

5 out of 5 stars A Life Changing Device   October 15, 2008

Plenty has already been said here about the Kindle. I'll just add that this device has changed my life (and also mention a couple of criticisms).

There are a small number of devices that I can say have changed my life:

* Cell phones have changed the way I communicate.
* GPS has changed the way I get around.
* TiVo has changed the way I watch TV.

And now the Kindle has changed the way I read. I read WHAT I want, WHEN I want, and WHERE I want. All I have to do is remember to keep the Kindle charged (just a few times a week) and remember to bring it with me everywhere I go.

I've become a more informed reader, because I can quickly look up every single word I don't know. I no longer assume I know what some of these words mean and I no longer cop out because I'm too lazy to go grab the dictionary in the other room. Very cool.

I've always been an avid reader, but now I'm reading even more than ever.

This device has truly improved my life.

My only complaints (I'll leave out most of the ones that have already been covered in other reviews):

* It was expensive. $350 was a big investment--even bigger since I bought one for my wife and one for myself.

* The book pricing is inconsistent. That's not Amazon's fault, because the publishers set the prices. Hopefully the publishers will become educated soon enough and lower their Kindle book pricing to match readers' expectations. I would say that 99.9% of Kindle buyers expect the e-books to be cheaper than paper books.

* Tough to organize books on the Kindle device. I know this topic has been beat to death, but Amazon really needs to implement this software change and roll out an update to current customers. The ability to organize document files into folders would be a HUGE improvement.

Do these few flaws stop me from giving it five stars? Nope. It's still a five star device.

5 out of 5 stars Seeing is Believing   October 15, 2008

I have been looking at this for my son. He loves electronic gadgets but doesn't get in enough reading. His 13th birthday was coming up so we bought him one. He has to read books for his LA grade each quarter and it is always cramming them in at the last minute. This quarter he was done at the mid-term. We are impressed!

4 out of 5 stars cover/battery   October 15, 2008

On the whole, I have been very happy with the Kindle product. There have been a few fustrations. 1. The battery cover is not very secure. It has loosen twice in three weeks. 2. The more that is downloaded, the slower the unit becomes. and 3. The unit is not very secure in the cover provided. The tabs used to hold the unit in place are not very good
