5 out of 5 stars Aluratek Internet Radio   October 30, 2008
Dan Hollands (Rochester, NY)
I bought the radio when the local Air America station went off the air and I wanted to be able to get it from another streaming source. I got the radio set up without much trouble - if your wireless router is password protected you do need to know the password. Once set Radio is easy to use and has good sound for a small radio.

4 out of 5 stars Very stisdfied   October 24, 2008
C. Dohm (Florida)
A little hard to get used to the controls and screens but once learned, it is easy to program. Had no trouble getting on the wifi once I found the wifi code. That could be a problem if you didn't save it. Great receiver for "news hounds."

2 out of 5 stars Good sound, lousy interface, impossible to add stations yourself   October 24, 2008

It has good sound that is punchy and decent. It's better than my clock radio. The hardware is superb and very functional for a bedside nighttable. The problem is the software. This excellent radio could be so much better if it weren't for the odd user interface mistakes and amazingly bad Vtuner software.

First for the interface. The backlight is extremely bright--a firmware update allows it to automatically turn off in 1, 3, or 5 minutes--each of which is too long. The remote control often stops working when you're punching buttons quickly, like the older TiVos. The interface doesn't make it clear that the system is busy downloading something and does not respond for a time (sometimes the hourglass appears, sometimes it doesn't). Takes a few too many 'clicks' to get to what you want. When you hit the 'power' button it doesn't start playing music automatically--you have to drill down through the menus again.

It is impossible to add stations yourself!! I am not kidding. You really can't. This is a major, horrible flaw that I didn't appreciate. There is no user customizable feature on [...] or at [...] to add a station, just a "suggestion" that it be added to the public Vtuner list. If you subscribe to premium audio services like DI.FM and SKY.FM, it is utterly impossible to sign in to those services, even though the service is completely standards-based and works on just about every player imaginable. It is not possible to input a URL into this unit. I am flabbergasted at this glaring mistake.

Oddly enough, I had to download the updated firmware from [...] to get the radio to work at all on a completely standard 802.11g secured network.

The sound is very good and I really like it. The software needs to be replaced with something better. It seems the software was designed to play your local media on your local network through the uPnP media center arrangement and the radio feature was grafted on later.

I tolerate the commercials on DI.FM and SKY.FM but wish I could log into my premium account. I'm getting a Reciva-based receiver to replace this one. This Vtuner-based receiver is just bad news for premium radio subscribers.

3 out of 5 stars So Many Paths to Audio   September 27, 2008

This device has a multitude of ways to pull audio: MP3, FM, wifi, Ethernet. The range of material you can access is astounding. I tried them all and, because its primary use is as a reliable clock radio, settled on good old FM. This device has better FM reception than my four year old FM radio. The Ethernet was the best, but the cable got in the way. the wifi dropped out too often, likely because I was a floor and 30 feet from the router. Setup is a snap with the large font screen and a host of options. The back light was too bright and only had on/off option. The clock alarm is very good with a ramp up volume function on the radio and a pleasant fail safe tone tune if the radio signal fails. It did not have a five day option. I would recommend it for those who want the extra options to access audio signals, but not for those who just want a clock radio.

4 out of 5 stars This radio attracts me but ...   September 24, 2008

I'm interested on this product but after reading customers' reviews I learned that we cannot add another station. This is not nice because the purpose of getting the Aluratek Internet Radio is to listen Internet radio stations ANYWHERE, something hard to do with a PC and in certain ways, with a laptop.

I contacted Customer Support inquiring about this issue and waht I got was the following, "You need to go to www.Vtuner.com and suggest what station you need to be added. Also, Real Audio don't work for the wifi radio, so make sure the station is part of Vtuner".

Now we have ANOTHER downside, if one of your favorite stations is streamed through Real Audio, you cannot add it nor listen it at all.

On top of that, it has a USB 2.0 connectivity but NOT A LINE IN JACK. This means that you cannot plug your MP3 player, Portable CD player or any other device to the Aluratek Internet Radio.

The purpose of my comments is to let you know the downside of the device but if this is not important to you, the Aluratek is a real wonder.

Let me think about it a little more but I believe that I can live without this issues and just take it out from my Wish List and buy it.
