3 out of 5 stars Had a high hope, but ...   September 18, 2008

This is my 4th wireless router. When I got this, I was excited to have a wireless N connection. My MacBook supports wireless N, and I was expecting to have an HD quality video streaming over the wireless network. And yes, I could watch the HD video files that needed the high transfer rate. Also the installation CD that comes with it was very helpful to setup the router. Although I do not need any setup CD to configure the router, I wanted to give it a try and it worked pretty well. The person who does not have any knowledge about a router and network can setup the wireless network with security within 15 minutes with this setup CD. So, this router could have been the great product for me. Well, I cannot give this product 4 or 5 stars due to the problem that I have been having. Here is the story.

I am using many devices on my wireless network. There are 4 computers (3 PC notebooks, 1 Macbook), 4 gaming consoles (PS3, Wii, Nintendo DS, and PSP), and an iPod Touch connected wirelessly, 1 desktop, and 1 network access storage are attached by the cable to the router. The job taking most of our network bandwidth is the streaming of video, audio, and pictures. My family members store their movies, MP3s, and digital pictures on the network drive and enjoy those over the wireless connection. So, stable and constant transfer rate is the most important thing in our network to watch movies flawlessly. However, I sometimes got some movies paused for the buffering. My MacBook, which has the latest wireless techonology, has been OK. However, my old laptops sometimes have jerky videos and are disconnected from the network. I updated the firmware of DI-628 to the newest one and tried every possible combinations of the parameters in the router to get the stable connection. I tried the different security methods, WAP, WEP and no security option and got the same results. This might be the compatibility issues with the wireless cards that I am using in different laptops, however, the previous routers, Linksys WRT54G and Netgear WGR614, did not have any problem like this. I do not think the DI-628 that I have is the defective one. It just sometimes does not work best. Now, I am using a DI-628 and a Linksys WRT54G router together. The DI-628 is used for the wireless N connection of my MacBook and the Linksys one is supporting my old laptops. And the DI-628 has weaker range than the linksys one. I got only 57% of signal strength where I can get 70% signal strength from the linksys router.

Well, I am happy when I use my MacBook with a wireless N connection. I truly enjoy the fast speed of wireless N. The DI-628 is pretty good when it works as other reviewers said. But, it could have been perfect if the DI-628 has great compatibility and constant transfer rate that I have had from other routers.

4 out of 5 stars D-Link Rangebooster + Network Magic = One Happy Customer   September 18, 2008

I've only been using the Rangebooster for a few days, but I must say I'm very pleased. The less I have to think about it, the more I like it! No fuss routers that do their jobs well are the ones I like the best.

This has been my experience with the Rangebooster so far:

Installation was a bit bumpy. While everything was connected right the first time, it took a couple power cycles of my PC, cable modem, router, and the VOIP modem to get everything to "play well together." Once all the hardware synced properly, it was smooth sailing. All the other computers quickly recognized the new connection with minimal or no help from me. The only exception was the laptop and Tivo. The laptop gave me a "certificate" error that I had to fix and Tivo just needed to be directed to the new connection and new password.
Both issues were resolved quickly.

At present, I have 3 PCs and a VOIP modem cabled to the router. On the wi-fi side I have an older laptop, a Series 2 Tivo, and a Wii. So far they are all playing nicely together for several days now. No problems or hiccups found. The QoS for my VOIP is excellent and it is installed "behind" the router.

Once all were up and running properly I installed Network Magic, the included software program on D-Link's installation CD. It's optional, but out of curiousity I wanted to check it out. Wow! So glad I did! This little program made setting up wireless security and other adjustments on the D-Link Rangebooster SO EASY! It also keeps me updated on the network's state of affairs and alerts me if it finds any problems. Nice! Network Magic is a gem of a program and I gladly recommend everyone to at least try it. I'm glad D-Link included it with their router package. (The basic version is free, the upgraded version cost extra.)

The real bummer I realize after I got the router is that I needed to also get the N-adapter to truly take advantage of the "N" goodies available on this router. Sheesh - how silly of me to think otherwise. They are now my future purchase list.

For a talented router that can work with your existing network and wi-fi needs, the Rangebooster does very well and is fairly priced. If you want to take advantage of the N-features, don't forget to buy the additional USB adapter or network cards you may need.

Wireless USB Adapter Rangebooster N Draft 802.11N or search d-link N adapter on Amazon.

4 out of 5 stars Non-techie review, great router even not using full potential   September 18, 2008

I've been dragging my feet on our house going wireless, my husband had a laptop with wireless capabilities but I was using my desktop and was perfectly content with my wired connection and the very long cable I had pulled up the basement stairs and tucked behind the sofa for him to grab and use to connect his laptop. Might not have been the prettiest option but it worked. Then he got a new laptop, which meant I got his old one. Suddenly I could surf the web from the sofa, or pull up recipes in the kitchen, watch a show online in bed, shop on amazon while my daughter played in the yard... if only we had wireless that was.

Welcome to the wireless world! My husband hooked up our new router, I only heard minimum complaining during the approx 1/2 hour it took him to get us up and running on all computers. Connection and speed was great, the router is in our basement but I have no problem connecting with full bars on the 2nd floor or even out in the yard. I was even happier when I realized our wii was super easy to connect to the network as was my new ipod touch.

Sadly for my husband only his new laptop supports the 5ghz so while we unhooked everything else so he could test it out we had to set it back down so everything else could be online too. It's still nice to know we have it for the future and the router works great even at the lower setting.

Great price, great product, great buy!

5 out of 5 stars A Very Solid Router   September 17, 2008

I really like this router. It was easy to set up and get working. It has a ton of options that let you control everything you would ever need to. It also has setup wizards so you don't ever have to use those settings if you don't want to. You can have both a wireless G network for your older devices as well as a wireless N network for your newer faster devices. Dualband means that you can select either 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz for your wireless N network. The specs are pretty clear that you have to pick one or the other. 5 GHz does work better, but not all wireless devices support it yet.

Cool Features:
- The Web interface is easy to use covers everything I need to do.
- It includes a setting for the lease length for DHCP. I had problems since the NetGear Dualband did not have this.
- Allows the router to email you the logs on a user specified schedule.
- Firmware is easy to update and the router will check if there is an update available.
- It is easy to find the grid of attached devices along with all the stats for each connected device both wired and wireless.
- Security for wireless also allows you to just pick the device from the list of attached devices and add it to the allowed devices. On other routers you have to type in MAC addresses.
- It includes two antennas to improve reception.
- It comes with a trial of the Network Magic software. I tried it for the heck of it and really liked it. It shows your network in a graphical format and lets you know all sorts of things that are going on. I have a network with a total of over 20 wired and wireless devices. I ended up getting this software because it was so useful.

Items to note:
- It is not a 1 gigabit router. But you can easily plug it into a 1 gig switch and then plug all your 1 gig devices into that switch.
- There are no big bright lights to light up the room like other routers.

4 out of 5 stars Works good, setup easy on Mac   September 15, 2008
myoho guy (Northern California USA)
Let me start by saying that I don't have any devices that can take advantage of the 5-GHz feature, so this review is limited to using it with a Powerbook G4 with 802.11g Airport Extreme.
I was a bit concerned when I found out that the setup wizard on the CD was for PCs only. There are, however, complete instructions in the user manual on setting the router up using a Mac. The instructions were clear and I had the router up and connected to the Mac in less than 20 minutes.
Speed and range of the router seems to be pretty good and I have had no dropouts in the connection.
Overall, no cons to speak of, only pros. I'm also prepared for the future if I end up getting new devices that can take advantage of the 5-GHz technology.
