5 out of 5 stars Excellent Quality   September 30, 2008
J. Mangler
The prints are fantastic quality. We use this as a dedicated photo printer. Always use the Epson ink and the highest quality papaer - it makes a difference.

Be aware that the printer is huge! If you're looking for a desktop, mulitpurpose, photo/document printer, don't buy this unit - it's just to large.

1 out of 5 stars Epson = Clogged Nozzles that get worse with "cleaning:"   September 29, 2008
reluctant techie (olympia, wa)
This is the last epson I will have die on me, never again after the fourth one was only a month old and on its first ink change.

What happens:
You run out of ink and replace a cartridge. This causes a nozzle cleaning cycle to run. Nozzles that were working FINE before are now CLOGGED because epson cant figure out how to purge their ink properly. They get gummed up.

Epson's solution? Run another cleaning cycle - which makes the problem WORSE! They can only be fixed by a technician via complicated disassembly that costs more in labor than the darned printer is worth.

This is my second dead epson in one month. They print amazing when they print right but that isn't often enough for the price.

Never again, Epson...never again.

1 out of 5 stars Skip the Epson 1400   September 26, 2008

I've been living with the Epson 1400 for almost a year now, and I have to give it a huge thumbs down. Yes, it produces beautiful photos. Yes, it can scale up to 13x19 inches. It's quiet and fast and all the other nice things everyone's saying about it. But oh, the cost! And I'm not referring to the price of the printer.

Epson made some horrible choices for the 1400:

- The ink cartridge is unique and, incompatible with all their existing lines.
- The cartridges are very hard to find.
- The cost of each cartridge is $20 plus and there are six of them.
- They are not available in discounted packs.
- If you actually try and print photos with this printer (rather than just text and the occasional web page) you'll spend between $50 and $100 a month on ink.
- If you print a lot of large photos - the poster size - you'll spend even more.
- Almost no ink refillers stock this cartridge. My experience with the one or two who do is, non-Epson color sucks.
- Epson won't even accept these cartridges for recycling!

If you're looking at this printer as a bargain, forget it. The ink costs will kill you. If you don't care about price, then you should be buying a better (semi-pro) printer anyway.

I wish I had my old HP printer back. Anyone want to buy a used 1400? Excellent shape!

5 out of 5 stars Great printer--good price   September 13, 2008

This is a great printer for someone who needs a large format printer. I am a graphic designer and I use it to proof 11x17 newsletters. My last stylus photo printer lasted 10 years. This is an improvement because there are 6 ink cartridges instead of 2. My only complaint is that ink is so expensive, but all ink jet printers have that problem. So I still recommend it highly.

5 out of 5 stars EPSON 1400 : PERFECT 1280 REPLACEMENT   September 6, 2008
MARVIN RINNIG

I've been a pro photographer since 1970. I sell rock concert photos I shot in the [...] .I've had the Epson 1280 with a bulk ink system for 3 years. It's known as a workhouse and very reliable. When you pump up the colour saturation in PhotoShop, the 1280 prints look like the old dye-transfer prints of the 60's & 70's that cost $200 for an 8x10 print back then.
When I thought it was time for a new unit, I studied all info on the Epson 1400. With the special low prices currently on this unit, I took the plunge. It's easy to plug in, load the software, and bam, you're printing beautiful 13x19 prints. It really seems to be the direct replacement for the Epson 1280 so it was easy for me to use. I didn't even need the user instructions. Plus I found some re-fillable dye ink cartridges that have been working perfectly. With these the cost of ink replacement becomes very low.
One thing I noticed about the 1400 is how quiet it is. I don't even notice it's printing. I watch TV or listen to the stereo and I'm not bothered by the 1400, whereas the 1280 was kind of a background noise.
By the way, I also purchased the Epson 3800 for larger, archival museum quality prints using their pigment ink. This printer is amazing. If you're looking for black & white printing that looks true to wet darkroom prints, the Epson 3800 does it. I use their Ultra Premium Lustre paper and the prints are dazzling. It totally reminds me of darkroom prints using the old AGFA Brovira paper. All you old timers like me will remember that paper. It was tops for museum gallery prints.
Kudos to Epson....I wish I had these printers 35 years ago.
