As good as my old Brother MFC-8840D August 20, 2008 K. Vandenberk (Chicago, IL USA) I have used my old Brother MFC-8840D for 3 1/2 years with not an moment of trouble due to the machine itself. Reliable to the nth degree. I am an attorney in solo practice who absolutely depends on my printer for my professional existence. On my first day of use with this machine, I printed out perfect color reproductions of newspaper articles -- gorgeous! I didn't really think that color would make that big a difference, but it does. I got the new color printer so I can give my old one to my step-daughter who is also hanging up her shingle as a solo. I hope she'll have the same good luck that I did. Just like the new one, the old printer has the look and feel of a machine made by people who really care about reliability. I can't say enough good things about the Brother product.
Best printer I ever had August 12, 2008 M. Hughes (New Orleans, Louisiana United States) I just got the wireless set up on the printer yesterday. I've had many, many high-powered printers in the last twenty years but this is the best one I ever had. If you don't want it to go to sleep so fast, you can reset the amount of time for it to stay on. The print quality is superb, it's fast and I love it.
Brother MFC 9840 CDW-disappointed with Color Printing and Color Copying August 11, 2008 Bhanu B. Ilindra (Great Falls, VA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I am very disappointed with color printing and color copying. There is no quality in color printing. I can see yellow or blue color on the background of the paper, and color combinations are also bad. As I am not a technical person, I usually use printer in default settings. In Default settings, it does not print colors properly. Also, does not copy properly in color. Dark colors look in blue. I have to go outside to do color printing or copying nd spend more money. I felt I have paid too much money for this printer as it lacks proper functioning. As far as the back & white, priting, Copying, scanning, anf other things are concernec, it does a great job. There may be some mechanical problem with the one I bought, and may not be the same with all other machines. Thank you.
Quite possible the best printer I've ever used! August 10, 2008 A. Bennett (Charlotte, NC by way of New York City) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I bought the Brother MFC-9840cdw laser printer for its duplex printing and color capabilities, and also because I read that it works both in the PC and Mac platforms. I have an IMac, but I have Parellels Desktop 3.0 for Mac installed so I can run Windows XP and all the usual business applications (Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Access,...). The print quality is extremely good in color and black and white, and it does work on both platforms. It has wireless network / remote printing capabilities, but I can't comment on it since I haven't used it yet. The fax and scanner are great. My only complaints are: 1) if both a Mac application (e.g., you're online ["safari"]) and a Windows application are open, and you print something from a Windows applications, jobs from the Mac program may stall. The Windows document will probably print first, and then you have to shut down Windows for the Mac file to print. It's not really a problem but more of an annoyance. 2) Although the MFC-9840CDW has duplex printing (prints on both sides) it depends on the document itself. Some/most PDF files won't allow you to duplex print. Duplex printing works, just not 100% of the time as I had hoped. However, copying 2 pages onto 1 piece of paper (front and back), or a 2-sided document couldn't get any easier. All in all, I'm EXTREMELY pleased with the capabilities of the Brother MFC-9840cdw laser printer, and would HIGHLY recommend it for anyone with a small business, small home-based business, or someone who wants a small office quality printer at home. It is quite possibly the best printer I've ever used - in my home office. Note, however, that it weighs 83 lbs. and is not a regular home-based printer, so know exactly where you'd want to place it because you won't want to move it around regularly.

When one considers the cost of a commercial copier, this shows it's value. It is as quick as reported, makes excellent copies and prints fine reports. There is some page curl but this has not been a reason not to buy this. If you are doing alot of commercial fliers, portfolios etc, you might find this curl to be annoying. Photos turn out more than adequate for the average consumer. I did not notice any real difference between this and an ink jet on photo paper but I have an untrained eye in this area. If you do a high amount of printing, the cost per page including the drum replacement and cost of the high yield cartridges, actually makes this less expensive to use than an ink jet. It is easy to set up wireless, even on a secure network. The manual is simple to follow.
