Compact, Elegant Design and Multiple Networking Options
The MFC-7840W measures a compact 16.9 x 15.6 x 12 inches (WxDxH) and tips in at just under 25 pounds, taking up minimal space in your office. Featuring an elegant black color scheme, the device won't look out of place in any office. An LCD backlit display keeps you apprised of the device's status.

With USB, Ethernet and 802.11b/g wireless interfaces, setting up this printer for use with a single computer or with a network is simple. Once connected, everyone in your office can print, fax, and scan. The wireless networking supports WEP 64/128, WPA-PSK, WPA2-PSK, and LEAP for security so you won't have to worry about your sensitive documents falling into the wrong hands.

Fast Print Speeds and Outstanding Output with High Compatibility
With crisp black output at 2400 x 600 dpi, no one will be straining their eyes to read your latest report. And with the prints coming out at a speedy 23 pages per minute, you won't have to wait for them either. The printer includes 32MB of memory and has a maximum monthly duty cycle of 10,000 pages. Thanks to support for PCL 6 and BR-Script3 print emulations, the printer will work seamlessly with a large variety of computers.

Flexible Paper Handling with 250-Sheet Input Capacity
The MFC-7840N features a 250-sheet paper tray that can be adjusted for both letter and legal size paper. Other media, such as envelopes and labels can be fed through the single-sheet bypass slot. The fold-out rear output tray reduces the possibility of paper jams by allowing for a straight paper path when printing envelopes and other thick media.

Make Copies and Faxes without Turning on the Computer
Using the same components that does the printing, you can make copies at the same fast 23 pages per minute. Thanks to a 35-page auto document feeder, you can copy, fax, and scan multiple pages without standing around manually swapping pages. The copier lets you reduce and enlarge from 25 to 400 percent of the original, and you can put 2 or 4 sheets on one page. The copier also supports a sorting function.

A built-in 33.6k bps fax modem lets you fax documents at speeds of up to 2 seconds per page. The device supports Caller ID, out-of-paper reception, external TAD interface, distinctive ring detection, auto fax reduction, fax forwarding, automatic redial, dual access, and fax broadcasting of up to 258 locations at once. Built-in memory allows the device to store up to 600 pages in memory for faxing.

Scan Photographs, Images, and Documents
Scan photographs and pictures at a resolution of up to 19200 x 19200 dpi (600 x 2400 dpi optical) at 48-bit color depth for integrating high-quality images into your documents. With the included OCR software for both Windows and Mac, you can also easily change paper documents into editable digital copies.

The Brother MFC-7840N Laser Multi-Function Center with Networking measures 21.7 x 20.1 x 20.5 inches (WxDxH) and is Energy Star compliant. It is backed by a one-year warranty.

5 out of 5 stars As good as they come.   September 3, 2008
Thomas Gebhardt (AK, USA)
This printer works great. I had needed a printer with fax/scan/copy and wireless capabilities because I live in a pretty small house and wouldn't have so much room for all these various devices and it needed to be wireless because I don't have enough room for it next to the computer so I had to choose a different location, but this machine here does everything I wanted for it to do.

Setup took about 5 minutes, which includes connecting it wirelessly to my WPA secured router which isn't configured to broadcast an SSID. It was a breeze. Instruction manual seemed just fine. No problems installing the drivers. Packaging when it came in was clean. I've successfully been able to use the drivers on Vista 32-bit, Vista 64-bit, and Server 2003 (even though it's not listed for support). I couldn't have asked for a better product.

5 out of 5 stars Great multi-function for Mac!   August 22, 2008
B. Christensen (Santa Barbara, CA United States)
As long as you don't need color printing, this might be the perfect solution to your Mac-based home or small office needs! I wanted to be able to scan and fax from across the network from iMac and Macbook, but was worried about the setup.. For both OSX 10.4 and 10.5 the setup was as easy as installing the CD and clicking a button. The printing and scanning worked automatically right out of the box across the network (hard-wired).

I have not yet tried faxing across the network, but the scanning works great and automatically detects the computers on the network that are installed with the brother software. You can scan from either the buttons on the MFC, or initiate the scan/copy operation from the computer on the network.

As is typical, the documentation is incomplete and inaccurate in many places, but since everything worked right out of the box, it wasn't a big deal.

If you scan a document to file, it will stick it in your "Pictures" folder by default. to change the default scanning settings, you will notice a little icon that gets put up on the top right of your screen next to your clock. Click here to adjust preferences. (not in the documentation!)

5 out of 5 stars Great wireless multifunction printer.   August 19, 2008
Fred Ariail (Northeast Georgia USA)
This was the only multifunction laser printer with wireless that I could find in for an inexpensive price. Wireless found my workgroup immediately but it took a little while to figure out how to put in my 128 bit wep code. Once that was in, it prints like a dream. I needed a printer that I could hide in the closet and use my notebook anywhere in the house. This printer did the job. Scanning, copying and faxing are very easy.

5 out of 5 stars Very nice and compact.   July 24, 2008

When I ordered this machine, the primary rationale was its wireless capability. With 6 computers in the household, I wanted it to serve as the main fax/printer for common day-to-day needs while reserving the expensive color printers for more special tasks. My first choice for its location was one of the few rooms in the house without an Ethernet outlet, so a wireless connection to our pre-N router seemed to make sense.

Well, it turned out that the room had no phone jack either and I was too lazy to wire one. So the machine ended up at the same spot as the one it replaced and was plugged into a wired Ethernet outlet. Therefore, I don't really know how well its wireless reception works.

Overall, I am quite satisfied with the purchase nonetheless. The price is reasonable and its software works well with both Windows and Mac. The machine is very compact for a multi-function laser printer, about 1/3 shorter than the MFC-8000 series, and yet does everything equally well. Another plus is its total silence while in stand-by mode. I have an old high-end Xerox that sounds like a jet engine even without an active job. I have no choice but to leave its power at the off position most of the time. This is not a concern with the Brother. It stays quiet all day, wakes up within a minute after a job arrives, and goes back to silence quickly. This makes it a unobtrusive and convenient presence.

My old machine is an MFC-8820D, which served faithfully for nearly 3 years without requiring new drums or toners. Unfortunately, the hinge on the auto-feeder broke recently under normal usage. I liked the overall experience of ownership enough to go with another Brother, but the hinge on this machine looks to be of identical design to its big brother, so I am somewhat concerned. On the other hand, all printer makers squeeze the customers on parts, so once a printer reaches 3 years of age and begins to require expensive consumables, the economics tilts toward outright replacement anyway. Taking into account the disposable nature of these printers, the $200+ price tag of the MFC-7000 series makes a lot more sense to me than those of the MFC-8000s and 9000s.

5 out of 5 stars Full-featured multifunction device   July 22, 2008

I was looking for a laser multifunction device with network capability that I could use to print from my laptop anywhere in the house. A lot of reviews seemed to point to the Brother MFCs as the best overall brand for laser monochrome devices. The only problem was that there were a LOT of different models to choose from - just going to the Brother website to do some comparison shopping made my head spin.

The MFC-7840W is a recently introduced model which has seemed to get good reviews across the board. A major plus is that it has both wireless and wired network capabilities. I took the plunge and purchased this model. Since I already had a wireless router to plug it into, I didn't need to use the wireless capabilities, but it seemed to be a nice option for future flexibility. The Ethernet connection was easy to set up and worked the first time I tried printing from my laptop.

I've been very pleased with the quality and feature set of the MFC-7840W. Not only does it print high quality output, but it has clearly-labeled buttons for scan, fax, and copy, which makes it a breeze to use any of these functions. Plus, the device is relatively light and doesn't have a very large footprint, so it fits easily on top of a small file cabinet. High marks overall.
