Every workstation is equipped with an APC UPS Battery Backup. It alleviates the problems of data & time loss when the power goes down, which makes it money well spent.

I've used APC battery backup units for years at home and in my offices. They, and ompetitors' backups are generally good whiile the battery lasts, but then comes the problem you will face. After about 1.5-2 years, the battery has died in my unit, and I decided not to buy a complete new whole unit, and called to buy a replacement battery, as APC advertises, is easy to replace for jusrt $29 or so.
I called APC today to buy the appropriate replacement battery, which is advertised for $29.95 on their website, however when I asked to buy it today, they said it was not available till Sept 27, over a month away!! NOT USEFUL AT ALL if you need a new battery NOW! The person helping me Quickly offered instead to sell me a new unit for a lot more than a battery, and I said "No dice".
She then told me I could easily get a replacement battery locally at Staples, and other Office Max/Lowes type places that sell their backup units. A call to three of them got no batteries, and one said "No retailers carry those big lead acid batteries, its just not practical, get 'em from APC".
The APC rep could not find the name of the president of APC to contact, and could not get me a supervisor. I spent over 40" with 3 different service people, each offering an expensive upgrade, not the battery! My time was being wasted, and I smelled a Rat the size of an automobile battery!
All I got, after almost an hour on the phone was a lot of "I'm sorrys" a sleazy "bait and switch" to get a more expensive whole unit, instead of the replacement battery (RBC47) (as advertised in their website for $29.99).
This is the ugly underside of the battery backup business. They claim easy replacement of the battery that barely lasts 2 years, yet somehow it's not available for months to you!
What are you going to do when your battery dies? Go with a competing company that offers replacement batteries and actually sends them, or wait desperately for over a month for a battery replacement from APC, that may never arrive? They know to the day when the next battery will arrive, yet don't plan to have enough of a supply to last till then. Sure! Tell that to the Tooth Fairy!
You can wait over a month for battery backup with APC. Is this reasonable to you? I don't think so, for your computer or mine!
APC, you have lost my business on your nonexistant support for your batteries.
Bait and switch is not appreciated.

This product works like a charm and has saved my computer several times over. We have power glitches all the time caused by problems with the electricity provider's equipment. The only problem was in installing the software. The disk came with Windows XP software but not for Vista. I contacted them by email and did get a response that was not understandable by me due to tech obviously having English as a second language. But I installed the XP version and it works fine. I'd buy it again with no hesitation.

I am using this product for my Home Theater Projector in my basement. Where I live, we have frequent power outages (especially in the Summer months with electricity demand). If I am using my Home Theater projector and the power goes out without the proper cooling of the bulb, I could lose 25% of the bulbs life. Bulbs for projectors run around $200 - $300 dollars. With the simple investment of this APC BE550R UPS unit, this problem is eliminated. I am probably going to get one more for my upstairs Home Theater system to stop the "surges" to my equipment when the power tries to come back on, also.

This product was listed as a recommended accessory for the flat panel TV I purchased here at Amazon.com. I knew I wanted/needed a battery backup unit so I looked into my options.
I want to say right here, right now - I'm a HUGE fan of APC and own several products from them for my computer and electronics!
I didn't know if 550VA was really the right rating for my setup so I looked into that. And I thought maybe there would be something more stylish. I found a great alternative but it was $[...]!!! APC, What are you thinking?!?
The $[...] unit is marketed specically for home theatre, A/V setups and is beautiful. It's not clear what VA rating it is but it's billed as a power conditioning filter also. While writing this I went to check the specs and there are now 4 models (2 black and 2 silver) at $[...] or $[...] each. That's better but it's still way out of my price range. That's 1/4 the cost of the TV for heaven's sake.
Long story short, this unit was only $[...] and nothing higher (short of the $[...] model) looked much better or hand significant advantages for my purpose, so I bought this one.
It has already saved my setup 3 times from storms but the last time it didn't protect my Home Theatre Receiver from going off and losing it's memory. The unit looks bulky and crap next to all my new compenents.
On the positive side, it's not huge, it has plenty of plugs and enough oriented properly to handle adaptors and things without sacraficing other plugs, AND it's APC which a big plus.
I would recommend this hands down over anything above it unless you can afford the really expensive home theatre models.
