Great Remote Starter & Alarm June 30, 2008 George Gibson (South Florida) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
I recently got the Viper 5701 installed in my 2007 Honda Odyssey Touring Edition. I have had it installed for 2 months now, and everything works as I expected. The most interesting feature about this alarm is that it has a 2-way remote, yet the remote is very thin, and still delivers 2 way response back to the user by using 5 lights and various sounds. Its much thinner than those bulky LCD remotes. In fact, its thinner than the Honda FOB which does not have 2-way feedback. It comes with a second 1-way remote, but I bought a second 2-way remote so we each have a 2-way remote. The Honda remote still works, so when I go to the dealer, I just give them the Honda remote, and they have no clue that I have an aftermarket alarm/starter. The remote works over 2000 feet away from the car. I have tried it while in a mall, and the car has started, so you do not have to be within view of the car. I have tried it at larger distances, and although the car starts, the remote does not tell you it worked, so you have to guess if you are REALLY far away. When the car is running due to remote start, and you put the key in the ignition and press the brake the remote plays a tune to acknowledge that you have taken over. If you did the same, without putting the key in, the engine will shut down when you press the brake. Similarly to other 2-way remotes, you can extend the run time from the remote without stopping and restarting the car. In addition, you can also check how much run time is left, and a series of LED lights will light up to tell you the time range. Another cool feature is the ability to check the temperature. This is sort of a gimmick, since the thermometer is in the module itself, and the module is hidden deep inside your dash. As you can imagine, its always hotter in there on a warm day, and colder in there on a cold day, so the feedback you get about the temperature is sort of pointless. Directed should consider attaching a thermometer on a wire so it can actually reach inside the cabin area where the HVAC is actually blowing. You can use the same remote for 2 cars, so if you get another Viper 5701 installed in your second car, there is no need to get another remote. You can easily toggle between cars by using the Function key. This alarm has enough channels to handle all the features that the Honda FOB can handle, so I don't use the Honda FOB anymore. I can open/close both power sliding doors, and the power rear hatch. Other alarms can handle this as well, but you need to use 2 thumbs. The 5701 solves this by using the F key: To open or close the rear lift gate I press and hold the AUX button. To open or close the driver's side slider I press the function button and then the AUX button (not at the same time though) To open or close the driver's side slider I press the function button twice and then the AUX button (not at the same time though) To roll up or down the windows, I press the function button 3 times, and then the AUX button. When the windows roll up, the sunroof also closes. To check the temperature in the car I press the function button and then hold the function button. The installer used the Viper 611T to make the sliders and the power lift gate work correctly. I had to buy 3 of these modules. To remote start, I just press the remote start button once. The engine will run for 12 minutes. The alarm remains armed during this time, so opening a door without disarming will cause the alarm to active. If somebody does get into the car, then touching the brake pedal will shut down the car, UNLESS they have a key in the ignition to bypass the Honda transponder in the, and they turn the key to the run position. Turing it PAST the run position to the START position will not grind the starter, so the system is pretty fail safe. When the temperature inside the car is below 55F, the rear window defroster will turn on automatically. I can also remote shut down using the same button, or to extend the runtime, without shutting down the car, I press the function button, and then the remote start button. When the car is remote started, I can still disarm the alarm and open/close all the doors using the remote and the engine keeps running, unlike some other remote starters that shut down the engine when you try to open the lift gate, or the sliders. The original Honda FOB still works, so when I go the Honda dealer, I take the Viper remote off my keychain and hand them the Honda remote, and they don't need to know the difference. The Honda FOB will not engage the Viper alarm. Honda has a feature that links the driver selection to the Honda FOB, and you lose the memory seats linked to the remote. Personally I didn't find this feature useful, since the seats only started to move once you open the door. I can press the button in the door at that point and it does not save me any time by using the remote. Viper has a feature called Comfort Closure, which essentially is designed to close the windows upon locking the car. I got Comfort Closure installed so pressing only the 'lock" button does the following: 1) Roll up all 4 windows, 2) Close the Sunroof 3) Close Driver's Side Slider door 4) Close Passenger Side Slider door 5) Close Power Lift Gate 6) Arm the alarm (doors) 7) Arm the hood lock 8) Arm the Shock Sensor 9) Arm the Tilt Sensor 10) Alarm Siren chirps 11) "Lock" LED lights up on remotes to confirm and it beeps One thing about the comfort closure. When you press the lock button, all the doors and windows close, and the alarm attempts to arm itself immediately. Since not all the doors are close, it aborts arming the alarm, so it chirps once. Once everything has closed, then you need to arm the alarm. A small annoyance to pay for the convenience for being able to close everything with 1 button click, so I've gotten used to it. Also if someone else closes one of the sliders, and then you press the lock button on the remote when the slider is moving then the door will open back up. Therefore the other slider will close, the litigate will close, but one slider will open back up. You would have to hit lock again to close the last slider, or F and then AUX, and then once everything closes hit lock to arm the alarm. I've gotten used to this quirk, I just pay attention to the doors, don't press lock when things are moving, and everything is fine. Anther "feature" I had to get used to is that to remote start, you only have to press the start button once. Most other remote starters require that you press the start button twice, or press 2 buttons at once, because they don't want you to inadvertently start the car. The single click approach does cause my car to remote start sometimes when it is in my pocket. You can lock the buttons, similarly to a cell phone, and I use the button lock feature if I have a lot of stuff in my pocket. After the price of the alarm, labor for installtion, the extra 611T's a few more modules for the power sliders the rear lift gate, and Honda Imobilizer Bypass module, and an extra 2-way remote, I paid $1200, but now I have the convenience of 1 FOB, and remote start with 1 button comfort closure, something which was really missing from the original Honda FOB.
