5 out of 5 stars Incredible flashlight!!   May 20, 2008

I don't know of any other compact flashlight that does all that this one does. For the price, this is a very feature-packed light. It is also versatile because it takes standard AA batteries, which you can replace with NIMH or other rechargeable AA batteries.

Each LED light (white, blue, green, and red) has 4 brightness levels that are activated by holding the on/off button. Each led also has the "strobe" cabability.

One observation - the strobe function would be more appropriately called a beacon flash function. When in strobe function, the light flashes very slowly - in approx. one second intervals. It is more like a strobe that you would use as a beacon, to show someone where you are, not a rapid strobe, as in my Blackhawk Gladius tactical light, which strobes at a frequency that is designed to cause disorientation and seisures in some, which is a nice feature for defense or offense.

5 out of 5 stars Neat little light   September 28, 2008

I use it for hiking. I clip it on the front shoulder straps of my Camelbak. I love the form & function of it. It's sturdy and durable. My only complaint would be the blue, green, and red led options are too diffused. The white light is fairly bright for a flashlight, but I wouldn't recommend this as your only light source, because compared to the other latest gen more traditional led flashlight, it doesn't have the lumens and range. But the utility of the light is why i purchased it. Great for a tent light, map light, or as i like it as a trail light, i just clip it on and aim it down towards the ground so that it lights my path. Overall i love this little light and would recommend to anyone.

4 out of 5 stars One of my new favorite flashlights!   October 13, 2007

As an owner of far too many flashlights, I assumed that this would be an interesting addition, but nothing special. It ended up being one of my new favorites! In a nutshell:

PROS:
Rugged construction.
Well balanced.
Very bright white and blue output.
Runs on a pair of standard "AA"s (this is really important to me)
A great emergency light with the "blinking" option.
Excellent options for lighting brightness and color.

NEUTRAL:
Waterproof. (Immersion depth is not indicated, does anybody know?)

CON:
Red and Green LEDs could be brighter.
Focus on Green/Red/Blue is a little diffuse for my tastes.

4 out of 5 stars Utility yes. Tactical, maybe, but NOT a target illuminator.   November 7, 2008

I give it 4 stars vice 5 due to white light not bright enough for target ID. But that enhances battery life, which may be more important in a peacetime survival situation.

Readily available at $50 +/- $5. Ingenious little widget. Best used for signalling to somebody else where you are, identifying yourself, reading maps or documents, and picking your way along a trail when a white light is OK. White light is way too dim for use in target I.D. or aiming.

That said, this is gonna be my carry light 24/7. When I sack out it is gonna be within reach, set on red, so I can use it to take a leak without stepping on the dog or falling in a hole. Awake it will be set on white, helping me find stuff that rolls under the car or is behind the shoes in the closet or is making funny noises under the hood of my car.

The Sidewinder can NOT be left on "HIGH." Any time it is turned OFF, it resets to LOW. Certainly a good idea for hostile environments. If you hold down the ON/OFF button, it will cycle Low-Med-Med High-High ... and then back down, back up, down, etc. Entertaining for my grandchildren, but useless in a hostile environment. There is plenty of time to stop at whatever light level you want.

But, that is one more reason NOT to use this as a target identification/illumination light. When I need a seriously bright light, this will not be it. Probably use a Surefire series light for that.

Control is ingenious. One knob, pulled, pushed, and/or rotated 90 degrees at a time, provides about 20 options of lighting. I can do it day/night, with work gloves on.

Color of light is easy to remember. Green-Red-White-Blue detents at 12-3-6-9 O'Clock respectively. Batteries standard Double-A, AA, of any quality you care to use.

If you really screw up, you can replace both batteries at Zero-Dark-30, or blindfolded at high noon ... if you can find the fresh ones! You can't lose the battery door, it is on an internal tether. You can orient the batteries, by feeling for the positive end of the new battery, and inserting each one oriented by feeling a bump on the outside of the flashlight.

This one is a keeper. I may ask that mine be put in my coffin when I go.
