5 out of 5 stars Keeps its configuration   September 21, 2008
C. Matson (El Paso, TX USA)
I first bought this router because of it's price. I had imagined that it would operate like any other router which includes a reconfiguration every now and then. I've had this router for two months now and it has a good strong signal in my 1600 square foot home. Even when I move my laptop to the other side of the house and my connection is down to two bars, the connection speeds stays fast.

As far as gaming; this is the router to have. The router configures the proper ports to open on its on when a game is started. It also works for downloading programs like Utorrent. Once the ports are not needed anymore, the router closes the ports.

For advanced users, this router is for you also. The web interface is fast and friendly but powerful. Once all the configurations are made, you will be able to save your configuration to your computer just in case you router loses its configuration.

2 out of 5 stars Some Laptop Incompatibility   September 1, 2008
Karen K. Othart
I purchased a DGL-4300 router for Xbox Live and to connect my 4 computers. For Xbox Live compatibility, it had to be downgraded from 1.7 to 1.6. Downgrading and configuration of the router was no problem for me. Xbox Live worked well, my hardwired desktop worked fine, and 2 of my 3 wireless laptops worked fine. My Toshiba and Dell laptop connected without a problem. My IBM Thinkpad connected, but the Internet connection would lock up after a few minutes of use. I noticed LAN errors increasing rapidly with this laptop connected and some increase in LAN errors with the other laptops connected. I called D-link and they confirmed not to use 1.7 with Xbox Live and my downgrading to 1.6 was recommended for Xbox Live. They also acknowledged that there is a problem with some computer connections with firmware 1.6. They suggested I try downgrading the router to 1.2 or 1.3 firmware and see if that will work. Since many fixes have come out since the 1.2 and 1.3 firmware, I decided to return this router to Amazon. I reconnected my DI-624 router and all laptops, desktop, and Xbox Live are working fine again. If you don't have wireless laptops, then go ahead and purchase this for Xbox Live, but if you do, I highly recommend you stay away from the D-link DGL series of routers until D-link gets this fixed. By the way, I searched the Internet and I am not the only one who had this problem. D-link did not have a fix for this.

1 out of 5 stars Total ripoff, defective junk!   August 8, 2008

It drops packets on wired connections, it has worse range than my BELKIN, and encryption on this joke of a router slows traffic down to 4MBPS! Total ripoff, defective junk!

I have had enough of these wireless routers, every one of them is no good. From D-Link to Linksys up and on down the line, THEY ARE ALL CHEAP PIECES OF JUNK!!!

I thought I had it bad with this BELKIN, but at least it has solid wired connections!

5 out of 5 stars Easy setup and outstanding performance   August 5, 2008
J. Reid Linker Jr. (Durham, NC USA)

I bought this as a replacement for my DI-624, another quality D-Link product that lasted me almost 6 years (I had it running/downloading 24/7 and the wireless chipset began to give out; usually routers only last 2-3 years with heavy use like that). This is one quality upgrade...

For starters, the DGL-4300 has a high-quality (not sure if it is high-gain or not) antenna out of the box which immediately gave me a better signal throughout my home. The Admin interface is easy to use and has many more features than its predecessors. Be warned though: this is a "gaming" router, and all of the Admin function revolve around this principle, with port profiles for many popular games.

It does not have to be used exclusively for gaming, so don't be turned off with all of the jargon! The GameFuel technology it boasts is simply a fancy way of saying "bandwidth prioritization," and can be used for *anything* including VoIP services (so your call quality can be clearer). However, I am a gamer and used it "as advertised" for my X-box Live connection and instantly began to see better performance through online play, even when my wife was downloading music on her PC!

Security is easy to setup, with the option of 128-bit WEP and WPA methods, as well as MAC filtering (in order for any device to access your signal, they would need to have its unique MAC address stored on the device). Bottom line: no one will be accessing your signal without your permission!

All-in-all, this is a great upgrade for anyone with an older wireless router, and probably the best starter router anyone could get without new 802.11n technology. I highly recommend it as well as any other D-Link product.
