 Won't work, no tech support from Adaptec July 11, 2008

Just bought this product in June of 2008 and tried to use it. Got a message from my Dell Inspiron 600m running Windows XP that the Adaptec caused a power surge and that it exceeds the power limits of my notebook and I had to disconnect it. I asked Adaptec about solutions, but they tell me "We are very sorry but the status of support period for your product has expired long back on 21st March 2007." They refuse to give me any information. Guess I'll be sending it back!

My USB ports were fried on my laptop by a diesel engine. I got this because it would allow me to access my USB devices (I tried replacing motherboard, but the refurbished board received from computer OEM was older and had USB 1.2 ports instead of 2.0 ports, constant problems, it was a better computer with broken board). My CueCat scanner works great, but my Seagate 5 gig drive (the one where the cord retracts around the drive about the size of the top of a soda can) required too much power for it.
If you have low powered items to run, it will work fine for you, but if your items are power hungry, either pay much more extra for the power cord (what is the purpose of laptop portability if you have to be tied to a power outlet to run USB?) or expect to not be able to use these devices.
However, if you have powered ports on your computer, you can plug your power hungry devices there and let this unit handle the lower powered units, if you have that option.

I bought this to import digital video on my Linux (Ubuntu 7.10) laptop. I plugged it in, and it worked right off the bat. I'm happy with it.

Works if you're going to hook nothing to it but a card reader.
Small hard drive (even a tiny 1.8") - nope...not enough power.
USB Wireless LAN....nope....not enough power.
The drive, I assumed, so no big deal. Not being able to even power a wireless NIC adapter was surprising, though.
Anything that requires virtually any power, and it won't work. It does have a place for an adapter, but expect to pay more for a power adapter than you did for this thing.
Still, if ALL you are doing is hooking a card reader or digital camera to it, it works like a charm.
 Driver problem but Good otherwise April 14, 2008

I was unable to get my IBM ThinkPad (P-4m,2ghz, XP SP2) to recognize this card when using the Adaptec drivers. A friend used it with no problem by letting XP install it without the Adaptec drivers. I had to re-install XP to get rid of the Adaptec stuff and then it worked great with the XP drivers. Card itself works good, just a driver issue.
