5 out of 5 stars Solid CD player   August 17, 2008

My Teac CD player I bought 4 years ago started having dust troubles. I had to clean the lens Monthly, than weekly, sometimes twice and it still could not play many CD's proper, even brand new ones.
So again on the search for a CD player, and based on other reviews I selected this Marantz CD5001. It arrived in a few days, well packed box-in-box with lots of protection material. This player feels quite heavy and solid build, much better than the Teac. Also a very nice remote, but I never use the remote. So far it's been playing every day 3-4 hours since 3 weeks without any trouble. It plays any CD or CD-R I have without trouble, even CD's from 1986 which I never cleaned in 22 years.

3 out of 5 stars Very revealing but....   May 9, 2008

I found this to be a very revealing CD player. There was detail here that I had never noticed on my CD's before, unfortunately I found this detail to be
very artificial sounding. It seemed as the player suffered from a bad case of "digititis" (inflated low bass and high end, no warmth in the middle). Also the low midrange was very week thus the player had no "punch" when playing Jazz, Classical or rock. Overall the sound just seemed to be cut off at the knees. I know that at $300.00 this is not an audiophile machine, but for how this player performed in my system I think someone may be better off just sticking with a decent quality DVD player. My Panasonic DVD, while less detailed, certainly sounds much more musical.
I returned this unit after about three weeks of burn in (Crutchfield's 30 day return policy is great!) I ended up spending $500.00 for a used Jolida JD100 (new list $950).

5 out of 5 stars Economical excellence   October 4, 2007

In the last year I moved from listening to music through speakers to a headphone system. This was kinder for my spouse who goes to sleep early and easier for me. I now hear all kinds of detail, don't have to jump up and down to change CD's as the CD player and my CD collection are right by my armchair. I started out with about $1000 worth of headphone amp and CD player and cables. I then tried this player. What a surprise!

This is an excellent player for audiophiles on a budget. Solid build, very good remote, and great sonics. All for the low price of $299. I listen through Sennheiser HD 595 headphones, which are a very good match for this CD player.

If you like to tweak things, placing the player on a solid surface and/or putting a heavy book on top will make the sound cleaner by reducing vibration. For those who aren't afraid to dive inside a CD player, after the warranty period is over, installing a new power cord will make it even better for a few $$.

5 out of 5 stars Audiophile Quality for $300!   March 7, 2007

Everyone knows the saying "You get what you pay for", but in this case, Marantz is practically paying you! This is a great bang for you buck type product. My friend owns the CD5001 and I have the pleasure of listening to it quite often. For $300, this is a great deal on a piece of audiophile hardware. It is made of the highest quality and sounds great. The big bonus in having a quality CD player versus a portable CD player is that there are more details revealed in the music and details are everything to audiophiles! All in all, a great buy and I'd highly recommend Marantz any day.
