3 out of 5 stars Quality audio with bad design   July 10, 2008

If I were to rate this product only on the audio quality I would give it 5 stars The player itself looks professional. The remote is well laid out if not a little cheap looking.

Unfortunately there is a major problem. If you have your player in a location with no counter space, you press on the remote, walk across the room to get the disc, walk back to put the disc in the case, open another case and walk back, then just as you are placing the new disc in the tray it will close by itself, chewing up the disc. The manual warns you that the tray will only stay open for 30 seconds. Unless you are obsessed with time, this basically means at any random moment the tray may close on you. If you are like me and value your CDs above the value of any player this is a horrible design flaw. Designers need to learn that all of this 'help' is often not helpful.

5 out of 5 stars MOST EXCELLENT with quality CD's [I don't use basement tapes]   June 13, 2008

This product is nothing short of MOST EXCELLENT !!! Before my purchase I read some pretty nasty reviews of this product here at Amazon.com ,,, [nothing personal] But anyone who criticizes this product MUST be using so-called "basement tapes" and expecting high quality sound reproduction :-( ,,, That ain't gonna happen, as they say, "garbage in - garbage out" !!! I suggest you invest in some QUALITY DISCS.

Marantz ain't no slouch ,,, back-in-the-day ,,, when I was in "the war" ,,, ca. 60's ,,, everybody who enjoyed music had a stereo. It was well known the "wise guys", the guys "with money", the guys who "knew electronics" [quality], the guys who had "experience with stereos" ,,, ALL had Marantz stereo components !!!

I'm glad to see and hear Marantz hasn't lost anything since AND has kept up with the Sound Reproduction Industry.

Any contrarians out there ,,, I suggest you purchase QUALITY CD's [DISCS] from QUALITY Producers before criticizing the Stereo Components that Reproduce that sound !!!

Example: I just purchased [again] Jimi Hendrix and Queensryche [Re-Mastered] CD's ,,, then I turned my stereo WAY, WAY, WAY up ,,, OUCHY !!! the sound quality is beyond compare !!! It put me on cloud 9 !!!

1 out of 5 stars You would think a $300 CD player's door would open   April 26, 2008

First let me say I never was able to put a CD in this player so this is not a review on the sound quality. I took this player out of the box and hooked it up to my amp. I went to put a cd into it and the door would not open. Marantz has no customer service what so ever. Their phone for customer support was disconnected. Their website contained invalid information. It said to look at a figure that wasn't even in the owner's manual. I emailed them and it took over two days for them to return an email asking me where I bought the CD player from, although their website claimed all emails would be answered in 24 hours. It then took them two days to reply to my answer. Finally after five days they told me I had to return it to Onecall. That cost me $21. I would never even consider Marantz ever again. Their customer service is a joke and they do not care about their customers in the least. I do not think it is fair that I should lose $21 because of a manufacturing defect but Marantz didn't seem to care in the least. What can you expect from a company that doesn't even keep their customer service phone line connected? I decided to spend a 1/3 as much on a Sony and amazingly it did work.

I rarely write reviews but in this case I have to. If you are looking for a CD player you need to buy this one. This player is amazing and I cant belief how different the music sounds on my system. I have a Denon DVD\CD player, over $150 more than the Marantz and there is no comparison in clarity and sound. This CD player made it fun to listen to my music again!!!

The unit I got was DOA: the tray would not open. Marantz tech support cannot be reached by phone. So, though the seller offered to replace the defective unit with a new one, I had no confidence that even a unit that functioned normally at first would be repairable in future.

Nearly all reviews of the Marantz CD5001, from every source, rave about the model. But after this experience I will look for a comparable solution from a different manufacturer.
