 Decent sound for the size August 26, 2008

I've wanted to get speakers for my laptop for quite some time but didn't want to spend a lot of money. Deal Barn had a great price for them so I thought I'd try them out.
I'm impressed by the sound quality and bass for something this size. The set up was very simple: plug the speakers to your power source, plug in the USB and it's ready to use.
They definitely are not portable speakers. They take up about 4" of space behind the laptop. The specs say these speakers can work for laptops up to 17" but I had 1.25" leftover with the speakers are fully extended and I have a 14.1" widescreen. If you don't want to cover the speakers with your laptop, your laptop can be no more than 14.5" wide. The speakers are designed be level with your laptop so if you have a cooling pad like I do, you'll need to play around a bit to get everything to fit right.

While this unit seemed like a great idea the reality was an entirely different matter. The sound quality was poor to fair and the power supply crapped-out after 2 days. The interface is a USB connector instead of the typical stereo pin jack and I think that's what makes the interface weird, meaning obtuse and clumsy. The unit's attempt to be a USB Hub as well is interesting in addition to having a headphone jack. I returned the unit for a full refund and bought Altec Lansing seperate powered speakers at a local discount drug store for almost half the price with twice the performance.

My primary computer is a Sony Vaio laptop. I love it, but the sound from the tiny speakers is not very good. The Logitech Speakers provide very good sound when watching videos or listening to music on the PC.
Although some reviewers have said they travel with the speakers, in my opinion they are too bulky and heavy to take on a trip, especially if traveling by air. However, they do not take up too much space on the desktop. The speakers fit nicely behind the laptop, and they can be adjusted to the width of the laptop. This design is more compact and easier to manage than having two separate speakers floating around on the desk.
Having more USB ports available is always a good thing, and the Logitech speakers include a three-port USB hub.
The sound from my laptop speakers sometimes seems too quiet, even when at the highest level. With the Logitech speakers I can get additional volume, so when the volume is low I do not have to resort to using headphones to be able to hear.
If you use your laptop mostly in one place (home or office) and want a solution that will provide richer, higher-quality sound, the Logitech AudioHub Speakers are a good choice.
