Product Description The new Reader (model PRS-505) features a svelte body design. Re-styled controls more closely mimic paper page turns and allow for quick, intuitive navigation.A next-generation electronic paper display delivers faster response and a higher contrast ratio for easy reading even in bright sunshine. Eight levels of gray scale provide for crisp and clear text, images, and graphics. This device is designed for people on the go, this device is compelling because it allows them to carry a wide variety of reading materials whether they are on a cross-country flight, in a doctor's office waiting room, or at a beach resort. The Reader can handle a stack of books and other documents that people would rather not carry, yet offers a 'book-like' reading experience unavailable with other electronic devices. With the capacity to store up to 160 typical eBooks, the Reader can act as a mobile library. Expansion slots for Memory Stick Duo media or SD memory cards make the device's library potential practically limitless.More advanced users will appreciate the USB-based mass storage capability that allows them to use the device as a portable drive for the direct transfer of documents, images and other files to the Reader. A new auto sync feature also lets users set up folders with books and documents that can be automatically synchronized when the device is connected to a PC.

Calibre is the reason to buy December 3, 2008 Kevin G. Muggleton (Denver CO USA) Just had 4 months in France, normally when I travel I always run out of books.. The device was fantastic.. The Sony Store for buying books is a nightmare to navigate, but a fair selection is available. The one major overwhelming advantage of the Sony is the 3rd party Calibre software... you can read most of the worlds best news magazines and papers for free everyday!! This in itself, pays for the reader in a week or two when you are overseas.
Great reader, but flimsy? December 2, 2008 E. Hiatt (Oxford, MS USA) I love this reader! My only problem is that the power switch is broken. I cut it off last night very easily and set it on my nightstand. Today, untouched, it wouldn't come on again, the "spring action" on the switch was gone. I had to plug it in to the computer to "wake it up" and I don't know what's going to happen when I need to cut it off. I guess I'll just have to let it run down, which is a bummer. I'll bookmark my page so that any random button pushing won't lose my place.
step ahead, but not yet ready for market November 30, 2008 Alexander Benko (Boston, MA) I owned already two Sony PRS-505 Readers. There is certainly a WOW! factor when you first get it. It is very usable - buttons, interface, loading of books. However: - most books are not available in electroninc form - the screen is extremely fragile. Being a book, you will carry it around, and surely drop a few times, within a month or two, eventually. - also, I am currently fighting a software glitch that does not let me reset the ebook. Given the apparently long life of the battery, I will need to wait for a month or longer until the battery is depleted and the unit resets.
Snoy E-Reader November 27, 2008 Kim E. Sweeney Product came with no problems. My daughter was very happy with her birthday present.
Love it November 23, 2008 JJ I just got the PRS-505, deciding to forgo the PRS-700 simply for the fact that I didn't want to pay the extra $100 just for a light and touch screen. I love the PRS-505, I haven't had any problems with pdf's at all. I think it reads them just fine. The only issue I have with it is the ebook library, you can't rename the book files, that's kind of annoying. And also the placement of the turn page buttons. they're kind of awkward but I'm getting used to it. All in all I think its a great device and if your thinking of a sony reader I say go for the PRS-505 and save some money than buying the PRS-700.
