Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
This is the one and only incredible four-lens-photo ActionSampler. With one shot you get a series of four images on one print and a macro-movie to be relished online! It is robust and ultra-heated, the ideal gift.

Amazon.com Review
The Action Sampler takes a great idea and turns it into a fun little camera. This camera uses four lenses to capture four different photos on one frame of film. The Action Sampler takes the photos a fraction of a second apart, creating an "action sample" that shows the sequence of motion. (Click on the "More Pictures" link at the top of this page to see sample photos that were taken with the Action Sampler.)

Brought to you by the same folks who produce the famous Lomo camera, the Action Sampler shares the Lomo's wacky, creative image--as evidenced in the glossy, photo-filled little manual that comes with the camera and is a work of art in itself. The Action Sampler is also a study in styling with its colorful, plastic see-through case. It doesn't have a flash and sports only a flip-up square of pink plastic to frame your photos. Everything is manual, including film loading, winding, and rewinding, and there are no settings to fiddle with.

As the manual blithely states, "The Action Sampler is not a finely tuned piece of apparatus made only of the finest in hand-crafted modern materials. It's made of plastic." In short, this means you shouldn't expect sharp, detailed pictures. However, you can expect truly unique, fun, and often striking sequences of photos. The Action Sampler uses normal 35mm film but needs plenty of light (outdoor photos turn out the best), so if you want to use it indoors, we recommend using a higher-speed film (ISO 400 or higher).

The Action Sampler is a blast to use, and it makes a great gift. While it has its limitations, its distinctive way of seeing the world is fun and exciting. --Holly Blumenthal

Pros:

  • Captures action with four photos on one frame
  • Easy to use
  • Colorful, unique styling
  • Uses normal 35mm film (2 rolls included)

Cons:

  • Cheaply constructed
  • Needs lots of light
  • Relatively low-quality pictures

2 out of 5 stars I finally gave it away...   December 29, 2006

I purchased this camera along with supersampler at the same time. Both with 4 lens camera, the picture quality on action sampler turned out so poor that I only played with it for one roll of film, then put it back to the box, and finally, gave to my friend(cuz she wanted a toy camera)...well...it does have a fun outlook, but if you really wanna enjoy a 4 lens camera, I would suggest to buy a supersampler, at least the quality is better.

5 out of 5 stars A great little camera   May 30, 2006

This camera is just fun. There are websites that will provide you with some fun ideas with it. We took it outside and tossed it to each other once we pressed the button. We also just walked with it and aimed it at our feet.

The kids who are ages 5 and under when we bought it played with this and didn't break it so it was sturdier than it might seem. It is easy to use and fun.

The only comment I'd make is that it goes fast. Once you push the button you don't have time to blink before it's over.

Enjoy.

The camera is a great novelty item. If you are looking for some fun, unfocused, pictures in the outdoors...this is your camera!

4 out of 5 stars Cool - but trade up for the Actionsampler Flash   December 11, 2004

I picked up an Actionsampler when it first came out in 2000 or so. As everyone says, and the Amazon review confirms, the shots are lo-fi and junky. It's fun if you're into that look, and it does its job well in bright sunlight.

In my humble opinion, you should spend the extra scheckels and trade up to the Actionsampler Flash. It has better lenses, better exposure, and a fierce 4-step sequential flash. With that, you can "sample the action" at any time, day or night.

1 out of 5 stars Poor quality - I have to return it!   August 15, 2004

I did't expect much since the product description says "it's made of plastic". But it should at least work!! At the fist use, it took me quite a while to load the film (I had no problem loading cameras before). Then I happily took about 10 pictures, and found the film winding clog did not work and the shutter could not be released since the film was not winded correctly. I tried and tried and finally gave up. This thing is so hard to use and so easily broke down.

BTW, the camera I received did not even look like new - there were scratches on the outside. I don't know if it had been returned by other people. Anyway, I'm so dissappointed at its poor quality!
