I had a PC card style smart card reader but when I purchased a new laptop that only had an express card slot, I had to replace it and found this one on Amazon. It doesn't come with the ActivCard Gold or ActiveClient Gold which is the software needed in the defense industry, so you need to get that seperately if needed. Of course, none of the readers usually include that software. This reader worked well ... installed easily and has run without any problems for the month or so since I got it. I knocked off one star from my rating because it's a bit awkward trying to get the smart card in the slop. In my PC card style reader, the bottom part of the slot stuch out an hair further which made it easier to find the slot and get the card in. With this one, it's diffult to tell if you're getting the card in the slot or if it's going above or below the reader (since the reader itself is sliding into a slot in the laptop). But, other than that, it has worekd very well (so far anyway) and was easy to install and get up and running (which isn't always the case with smart card readers).
