Product Description
Traveling to your favorite destinations has never been this easy. The Nav-u portable satellite navigation system has a sleek, 4.3" touch-panel widescreen display and can be easily mounted in any vehicle. The brilliant, high-contrast full-color graphical interface is also intuitive and fun to use. Whether it's a trip across town or cross-country road trip, the Nav-u satellite navigation system makes the perfect travel companion. The NV-U73T comes pre-loaded with Map Content covering the entire United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico. Dual View capability displays dynamic route information to provide an even clearer view of what's around the bend or in a highway merge scenario, which Junction to take. Commonly used commands such as Take Me Home may be accessed by gesturing an inverted V(R) on the screen versus paging through numerous menu screens. Step away from standard GPS mapping and towards a more complete navigation solution. Real Time Traffic Information radio reception allows the NV-U73T to constantly monitor relevant traffic conditions and automatically re-route you around trouble spots. TTS (Text to Speech) also eliminates second-guessing when making a turn; the device utilizes spoken commands ensuring you are able to follow the directions by street names. Using the Sony-unique Super Suction Cup, mounting a Nav-U portable satellite navigation system to either the dashboard, console, or windshield in virtually any vehicle is quick and easy. Stable and secure while driving, the Nav-U portable satellite navigation system can be easily removed whenever you want to take it with you. 3 out of 5 stars Decent Basic Unit   October 6, 2008
Ken Sturrock
This GPS Unit works fairly well but in comparison to Magellan and Garmin units it comes up short. Compared to the competition, the Sony is stylish looking and easy to use - but its routing is not very intelligent, signal acquisition is slow, maps are sparse and database is spotty.

I had a Magellan for business use and have used a Garmin. I figured that the Sony would be similar. Although the Sony isn't bad enough that I have wanted to return it - most people would be happier with a more sophisticated unit.

5 out of 5 stars Firmware 3.0 is what you need!   September 30, 2008
Thomas Demers
This GPS is greatly improved with firmware version 3.0 installed.
The Navu NV-U73T originally shipped with firmware version 2.0.
Before installing the update I would have given the U73T three
stars. With the upgarde to version 3.0 I give it the full five stars!
This download is available for FREE from Sony and ONLY via CD
shipped directly from Sony. For those of you looking to upgrade your firmware you'll need to register your GPS online (www.sony.com) and then provide a mailing address for Sony to send your upgrade CD.

3 out of 5 stars Sony NVU73T 4.3'' Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator not so great   September 6, 2008

The GPS came in perfect condition. The price was great and the specs for the unit are everything you could possibly want: 3D/2D display, split screen to show exits, easy to use menus, easy satelite acquisition and great route planning capability.

The problems started when I entered my home address. Granted I live in a small town in Florida that no one has heard of, but my house showed up in the wrong place. Next came my trip to Ocala, Florida. The route chosen was great until there was more than 1 road to select. Just before getting on to I-75 the 73T took me about a mile north of the entrance and then took me to I-75 at which time I entered I-75 then went a mile south where I went past the entrance I should have gotten on. So I tried to alter the route with the block road feature. It wouldn't work.

Calling tech support was great. They were very nice but the front line techie couldn't help. They escalated the problem to engineering were also very nice but they could not help. I spent about 2 hours trying to help them understand what was wrong and they finally said I was right...the road block feature didn't work. There was no way to fix it at this time.

Amazon returns was very simple. I did it online. The unit was picked up and my money was returned. I am now waiting to receive my Garmen 650. I hope it works better.

5 out of 5 stars 3.0 Firmware update FAST FAST FAST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!   August 4, 2008

I am in LOVE with this unit! the screen is so large and bright compared to my previous garmin nuvi 350. When I fir got it, acquiring signal and recalculating route takes like 5 minutes, but after I got my free firmware 3.0 cd from sony and update my device, BAM it's LIGHTING FAST!!!! It sometimes even beats the speed of my Nuvi 350!!!

pros:
cheaper than the nuvi 350 and bigger screen.
and BEST OF ALL:
IT HAS QWERTY keyboard layout!!!
I hate nuvi's abcd layout with a passion, and with this, wow it's so comfortable.
Also it comes with FREE traffic antenna and updated service, unlike the nuvi which you have to pay $150 for.
no mp3 or anything, but I'm sure people use ipods for that...
btw:nuvi 350 recently got discontinued....

cons: no photo displaying ability
no mp3 player
no bluetooth
only uses memory stick pro duo

2 out of 5 stars Beautiful to look but lacks in performance   August 2, 2008

I have had similar experiences of this model with everyone else here who has posted review.

This unit is a pleasure to look at, a very big screen and the graphics makes other brands look like cheap toys. The extra functionalities such as split screen and branded POI are nice touches. The maps and POI seem most accurate but was missing a local new highway interchange finished nearly 2 years ago.

However, the price seems a little high given its feature set.
More importantly, its performance left quite a bit to be desired since everything is just so SLOOOOOW compared to other navigation devices I have tried. From booting up to acquiring satellite signal to searching for POI, everything seems to take forever. I was trying to show this off to my friends in my car, only to have it keep us sitting in the parking lot for a good 5 minutes waiting for it to acquire a signal and find a local Starbucks. The re-route (e.g. after you miss a turn) feature seems a little faster, but is still uncomfortably slow as you are speeding down the road.

Bottom line, if these two drawbacks do not bother you and you are more interested in how a GPS looks, this is the right unit for you. To me, it's too much fluff and not enough substance.

2 stars. The nice screen and graphics keep me from giving it only 1 star.
