Great GPS July 28, 2008 William A. Michaud 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This Magellan Maestro is by far the best Gps I have owned and I have owned several. It is super sensitive, acquires satellites immediately, and the directions are almost always accurate. The SurfStarIII chipset is unbelievable, and the AAA tourbook is great. The only negative is the short battery life, but most people use this unit pluuged in. No Gps made today is perfect. I have owned 2 MIO Gps units which always sent you the long way and were so innacurate that at times they didn't recognize streets. The only Garmin I owned worked great bu didn't always hold satellites.
Works great so far! July 24, 2008 ADK (Southfield, MI) 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
I bought the Magellan 4040 off the goldbox deal a few weeks back. First of all, there's absolutely no sign to say the unit is refurbished except the sticker on the box. Unit is in mint condition with no scratches whatsoever and all the accessories are new. It already had the latest firmware update (v2.36) pre-installed. Granted I've been using it for only a couple of days, but so far I couldn't be happier. From a cold start, it took only around 30 seconds for it to lock on to a signal and never lost it after that, and it usually locked in 10-15 seconds afterward. The routing is good (I can tell because I know the area pretty well), and is very quickly to recalculate once I misses a turn. When I purposefully missed a couple of exits on the highway, it was fast enough to reroute me before the next exit came up. The POI database is rich with built in AAA tourbooks, but a little slow to respond once you try searching for a POI. It shows the annoying hourglass while it's busy, of course, it uses Windows as the operating system... The downside would be that it doesn't have mp3 and whatnot, but I wouldn't expect it from a GPS under $150. It doesn't look that much aesthetically pleasing to me, but maybe that's just me. The unit tends to be a little verbose, unnecessarily long directions and redundant directions: when I'm already on the highway, it tells me to keep going on the highway... But I can live with all of these as the major functions seem to work great, where else would I find a 4.3" GPS with all the features for under $150? Only time will tell how well the unit will hold up, and I'm keeping my fingers crossed because I've heard many horror stories about the Magellan support..
The best feature loaded GPS for $100 (refurbished) September 22, 2008 DragonLord (PA, USA) 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
I bought this refurbished for just $99 bucks as my first ever GPS. I had tried my friends Garmin c330 for a trip and decided to buy my own. The Garmins were too expensive for the features I wanted (4.3" screen, text to speech, and large POI database). Well this unit has all those features and adds bluetooth, AAA service, trip planner, and exit POIs to the list. It even has a voice recognition add-on option in case I want to upgrade in the future. So many features for a $99 unit is absolutely incredible. The routing calculation and re-routing calculation, if you miss a turn, takes slightly longer (by a few seconds) than the Garmin c330 but it is perfectly acceptable for my needs. I do prefer Garmin's menu system as I feel it is a little bit more intuitive but the Magellan 4040 does the same thing and after a small learning curve I am quite happy with this unit. I'll take all the extra features in exchange for the slightly easier to use Garmin. The Magellan Maestro 4040 is a great buy.
Megallan 4040 gps October 15, 2008 Rajesh Excellent service and the fastest delivery done so far.Keep up the good work.I am impressed.
Amazing navigator value October 15, 2008 Stanley H. Cohen This refurbished Maestro 4040 unit at $99 cannot be beat anywhere. I recently acquired it and have used it twice w/o any hitch. Magellan partners with AAA so the tourbooks can be updated via FREE downloads. Updated maps are $80 but I shall wait until I start to encounter any problems. The unit is full test to speech and the options for display, etc. should satisfy any typical users. Eventually I will try the Bluestone connection and so of the alternate mapping options.
