Here's a gem fellows Wes Montgomery collectors. In the spring of 1964 Wes, at the highest peak of his successful career recorded this splendid session with the great Billy Taylor trio (Billy taylor piano, Ben Tucker double bass, Grady Tate drums) and Joe Williams on vocals (tunes 9-16). It is a wonderful studio date! The first eight tunes are instrumentals, with Wes in the leader's chair. The other tunes are sunged by Joe Williams and it's a delight for real. Don't think to buy this one only for the first eight tunes, Joe Williams sings in an extraordinary way here (Wes comps in those tunes very lightly adding some notes but never coming in the way of the piano which is the main background instrument). But hey, obviously, the first eight songs are the ones that deserves here our best attention. They are worth the high ticket! It is Wes as we all love him. Swinging and creative with a stellar cast behind him ready to support him. The program is a very beautiful standards program, there are not Wes's originals (aka West coast blues, Naptown blues and so on). They are all standards except for five Billy Taylor originals (It's a grand night for swinging, A bientot, Capricious, Paraphrase, Freedom). I know this album is quite expensive (and actually if Amazon is correct it is even unavailable ... but I did buy this one the other day in the very expensive Japanese edition, so ... if you search well you probably could find this somewhere). It is fabolous you can believe me, and, if you really love Montgomery, it's not something you can stay without. And consider that you have even a very nice Joe Williams session as a gift. Good luck!
