Editorial Reviews:

Amazon.com
"I just finished a record with Mudcrutch, my old band before the Heartbreakers. I am over the moon about it. I couldn't have hoped for it to be as good as it came out." In summer 2007, Tom Petty reunited Mudcrutch, consisting of himself, Heartbreakers Mike Campbell and Benmont Tench, original bandmember Tom Leadon, and Randall Marsh, who joined when Mudcrutch first went to Los Angeles in search of a record deal in the early 70s. Now, more than 30 years later, Mudcrutch finally has its debut album. With new Petty songs and a handful of covers, the self-titled disc is both classic rock and a rock classic.

5 out of 5 stars What Should Have Happened After Wildflowers   October 3, 2008
R. L. MILLER (FT LAUDERDALE FL USA)
When it came to "just plain Tom Petty" albums, we had '89's "Full Moon Fever", followed by '94's "Wildflowers". Then there was this humongous gap between that and '06's "Highway Companion". Now we finally have the piece that was supposed to go in there, in this album. The classic "Shady Grove" (which I first heard in junior high on a live Kingston Trio set). Then right away we get the best one; "Scare Easy". Other standouts are the Dave Dudley hit "Six Days On the Road", which was his followup to the spoken "Giddyup Go", They both became major forces during country's big nationwide radio breakout of the 1960s and it's good to hear Petty do one of them. He even does the extended Lynyrd Skynyrd thing in "Crystal River" when (as another reviwer pointed out) he doesn't usually do long stuff in the studio. When it comes to the McGuinn number "Lover Of the Bayou", though, I realize McGuinn's name might very well be the answer Petty would give to the question "who's your daddy?", but let's face it, McGuinn himself had a hard time doing justice to that song--the best version is to be found kicking off the live section of the Byrds' "Untitled". It remains the winnah and still champeen. It strikes me that Petty is at his best on these special projects apart from the Heartbreakers. Why the HB releases don't have that kind of direct, no BS energy is beyond me. Come on, TP--Jake Dylan is in your rear view mirror. It ain't like you don't have it anymore--this album proves that!

5 out of 5 stars Lots of fun   September 15, 2008

The more I listen the more I love this CD. A little bit country, a little bit folk, a little bit rock and roll. Don't take it too seriously. The band seems to really be enjoying themselves. This one is lots of fun!

2 out of 5 stars If you want rock, look somewhere else. This is country!   August 31, 2008

Listen to the song samples first before you buy...

This album was "recommended" to me by Amazon.com presumably based on my history of purchases. Well Amazon, you got it dead wrong. This is 100% country, and if you like that, fine, but if you don't, run don't walk.

3 out of 5 stars TAKE 3 songs off, and it's perfect   August 12, 2008

"Bootleg flyer " ??? What a stupid song. Who wants to think about that in there head......driving down the road. What about " Orpan of the storm " ?? Now there's a happy tune ( YA, RIGHT !! ). And why is Tom Petty singing about, what sounds like some dark, evil angel, in the song " SCARE EASY " This is not a cheerful selection of songs, for the rest of the album. WE, the consumers, want to be happy. Write about FUN stuff. The topics, subjects of these 3 songs, mess-up the feel of this album. If edited we would have a great cd. I've noticed that in the last last 3-4 albums by tom petty, that it's not the sound or voice of his songs that are bad, but the SUBJECT of the songs. There not wrote about something interesting. FIX IT. (p.s ) The other songs are really good.
