Wow, are all women mean? May 1, 2008

Let me preface this comment by saying I am in no way affiliated with the book, website, or Navy, but have been connected to the military my whole life. I've noticed all the women on here complaining about the book being completely inaccurate, bureaucratic, and not helpful in any way, but let me ask you all this: why don't you all leave some advice to people looking for answers instead of nagging on this woman for making an effort to do so?
I understand this book is off in several areas, and it may be "condescending" in others, but it is not a complete waste. For women (and the occasional husband) who know nothing about the military, this is a decent source for just LEARNING a little about how everything works. It more or less just gives you a generalist glance at what military LIFE is like, which is very different for people with no former affiliation to the services. It gives you tips on paperwork and stuff to get done right away, which I know is useful firsthand if you don't want to get screwed by POA type stuff, and ideas for moving which is definitely helpful. Oh, and by the way, when she says stuff about supporting your husband's career, where exactly did it say anything about being a Stepford, stay-at-home, suck-up-to-the Boss Wife? The military life is different, and if anything I think she was saying that a sociable, upstanding wife can be an asset if she's not an ignorant, gossipy person.
Like I said, it's not even close to a perfect resource book, but ladies... take it easy on the woman. At least she is trying to help out... why don't you all, in your unbiased manners, provide some links or other books for new military wives to look at? That would be a more beneficial use of your time...
Speaking of which, here is a start... [...]... keep in mind this is sometimes a hard to navigate site, unless you know what you are searching for, but like I said it's a start... good luck ladies!

This book is great for wives who are just getting to know the military life. The author speaks in a way that is very understandable to the average non-military person. Do not listen to the bad reviews. This book is worth the money. There are great little stories and suggestions even down to hotels that accept pets for when you are pcs'ing. Good luck new wives!

Are you new into all this military life? Spouse, Fiance, Family Member...? I'm sure you want to understand all aspects of this new life! Right? Well, I can tell you that this is an excellent book that introduces you to the realities of the military world and guides you through all the military organizational system. From the moment you say "I do!", to relocation, house hunting, health benefits, starting a family, deployments, etc... All you need to make the best of your new military life. Easy to read and easy to understand. You definetly have to have it in your military library and have it handy for reference.

THE BOOK: I picked up this book about 6 months into being an Air Force wife. It was just a waste of money. I couldn't even finish it. There is no useful information for an AF spouse in there other than the ranks charts...and I already knew all of that through JROTC in high school. Unless you would like to learn how to belittle yourself and lose all pride in yourself, don't read this book. THIS IS THE WORST BOOK A NEW SPOUSE COULD READ!
THE SITE: Even worse than the book. However, if you need help with the afore mentioned belittling of yourself, do go to this site as the women will jump over eachother to do so for you. Contrary to what a few other reviewers have stated, this site isn't full of "young, barely out of high school" women acting this way. Oh no, it's full of 25-30 year old women that think just because they haven't personally experienced something, that anyone who says they did is obviously lying. In fact, from what i've seen on this site, it's the 18-24 year old wives that make the more educated, grammatically correct, open-minded postings.

I thought I knew the basics about the military since I was raised being the daughter of a military soldier. There are so many things I didn't have to deal with and this book helped open my eyes to several different topics, highly recommended!
