My husband recently deployed to Saudi Arabia and this is his first official deployment. We have been away previously due to training exercises, but nothing can prepare for a deployment, except for this book. It is a must have for spouses of deploying military personnel. This book talks about the different stages and phases that go along with deployment, it let me know that what I was feeling is normal and also gave some great tips for making the transaction smoother and easier for everyone in the family.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Have Guide for All Military Families!   October 29, 2006

There are some books that you need to make a go of your life--the Bible for some, a first-aid book for others, a how to fix everything in your life "For Dummies" book for most of the rest of us. However, if you are a military family, then Karen Pavlicin's book "Surviving Deployment - A guide for military families" is your survival book and should be on the top of the list. This is like taking a course in "Military Family 101A" without any college credits and no tuition.

This is the best book of its kind out there and one that should become a tool that all military families should have close at hand. There is so much great advice and information. With this book you can take a lot of the anxiety and fear out of going through any deployment. This book gives you that kind of emotional support and practical wisdom. There are also personal stories from many families and checklists that are "real world" helpful!

It is well written and easy to read. It covers so many areas and subjects from how to handle finances to problems with your children. There is not much ground that the author does not cover and relate to in some way. Reading this book can reduce the stress levels associated with military deployments through knowledge and education.

This guide book is given a MWSA FIVE STAR RATING!

MWSA 2005 Gold Medal Award for Reference & Guide Books!

While the author does a good job at addressing the general issues of deployment, it is lacking in specifics. All of the information in this book I had already found on different websites - for free! And much of the information about keeping your house, car, and finances are common sense. I agree with other reviewers who feel this book neglects Army families. I found that I skipped many paragraphs of the book, simply because my husband doesn't deploy for six months on a ship. On top of that, I don't like that the author suggests that as a military spouse you have chosen this lifestyle, so deal with it. I did not choose this lifestyle, and I'm sure I'm not the only spouse who was married before their soldier decided to become a soldier. I don't see how those kinds of thoughts will help you cope with deployment. So if you're looking for a general 'how to' then this is a good book. There are some good chapters, but don't look for specifics, especially if you're an Army spouse.

5 out of 5 stars My Deployment Bible!!   August 15, 2006

This book has some great ideas in it. Not only did we set up a budget (and spreadsheet to track all of our differences in pay, etc during deployment), I also used that chapter to help us plan our savings and emergency funds, something we hadn't gotten around to yet! We have used some of the communication ideas, too. We don't have kids, so I also appreciated the section about ME and how to stay busy and sane with the right kind of activities. The ideas for home security/feeling safe and also for getting to sleep at night were helpful too.

This helped me in lots of ways during my husband's deployment. It's a great book for other situations though too. It covers the basics for managing your finances, your kids, and having a great relationship. Thumbs up!!
