Sony DVD Portable Player June 27, 2008 The Sony DVP-FX820 8 inch portble DVD Player is great. I don't really enjoy stting in front of my computer or using the main TV to view The Teaching Company DVD courses. This unit allows me to sit out on the deck or where ever. Using earphones the power draw is low and I have yet to run the battery down. I have run it for over 5 hours. The image quality is excellent and the controls are good. The remote is handier than you might think.
Good picture, very poor sound, mediocre battery life June 27, 2008 4 out of 7 found this review helpful
I bought this as a carry-along to use with exercise DVD's when traveling. The picture is fine for this purpose, since I'm usually in a confined space anyway and not too far away from the unit. However, for general use, it has two very serious drawbacks: 1) The sound quality with the speakers is extremely poor, worse even than my 5-year-old no-frills laptop - and the speakers are about the same size as the clunky old laptop. I can't believe Sony can't put better speakers in this thing. 2) The battery life is nowhere near the advertised 6 hours, even with the video display brightness turned down. Another reviewer was able to achieve 6 hours with the brightness turned down to 10 from the default 20. I can't get 2 hours at that level. If battery operation life is important to you, be realistic with this one - though shorter-than-advertised battery life seems to be an across-the-board problem with portable DVD players. I'm not bitterly sorry I bought it, though I have not had it long enough to comment on whether problems develop after using it for a while - another reviewer describes playback problems after several months' use. But I am disappointed with the sound quality and sorry I can't use the battery power for longer.
Sony DVP-FX820 Portable DVD Player June 27, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The Sony DVP-FX820 is a solidly built product. The twist screen works out well for my indoor biking arrangement. I flipped the screen 180 deg. The display has an honest 480 lines to avoid compromised picture of some other models using less than 480 lines of pixels. Machine is simple to operate. Only missing desired feature is zoom to generate larger picture when one doesn't mind losing some picture on left and right edges. Such a feature is standard on standard monitors, and may not be normal to have in dedicated small screens integrated with portable DVD player. This player is my personal favorite among many I tried at retail stores.
I love this DVD player (had for 3 months) June 27, 2008 I love this DVD player. Ill explains why (I use it for home use). It has great picture quality. The Audio is great too. It also has 2 audio jacks so that way you won't need a splitter. Also it comes with a cord that you can connect to the TV so that way if you're regular DVD goes on the ritz you won't be without. Another thing is I have sometimes rent DVD's that were very badly stratched and they still played and did not skip. I have not had any problems with it, I can watch 3 DVD's back to back before the battery dies and it is a very quiet unit. I did a lot of researsh before making the perchace to me it was between panosonic, auoto vox, and this one. After a lot of people reviews and product specs this one is the more advanced and was reported to last longer plus it has great customer reviews. Now that Ihave it, I know I made the right choice.
Great player....BUT!! June 26, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
This player is as good as everyone says it is. BUT it does NOT play DVD-R like the first reviewer says. I had a cheap portable player and wanted to replace it with something quality. After a lot of research I decided on this Sony. The Sony website even says it will play DVD-Rs, but once you open the manual it says only if they're formatted a special way. False advertising. I don't understand since even the super cheapo portable DVD player would play any disc, so why can't Sony figure it out? So now I have to return a second player (other was a Coby TF-DVD7107 where the battery only lasted 1 hour and skipped at random.) So if you plan on playing DVD-Rs, it's 1 star. Otherwise it seems ok.
